In this 90-minute video, Doc Watson appears in half a dozen performances, ably supported by the late Merle Watson in one segment and by Jack Lawrence in the others. Norman Blake and the Rising Fawn String Ensemble purvey both Celtic roots and country branches with equal Californian of this crowd, makes even the 'squarest tune (Turkey in the Straw) an adventurous new experience. Tony Rice appears in a variety of settings, ranging from an evocation of the old-time country 'brother duo' (Ricky Skaggs play mandolin and sings high harmony) to a kicking contemporary bluegrass ensemble (Tony Rice Unit) to a cooking all-star jam on the 'new acoustic' fringe (jamming with Tony are Sam Bush-mandolin, Mark O'Connor-fiddle, Bela Fleck-banjo, and Jerry Douglas-dobro). Traditional fingerstyle guitar is particular to its time and place, drawing heavily upon local culture, but allowing for personal expression and innovation. Each of the artists presented here is a master of fingerstyle guitar, whether two or three finger picking. With rare exceptions most were born around the turn of the century or in its early years. From the Carolinas, Kentucky and Tennessee to Texas, they fashioned a deeply influential manner of playing wrought from rags, blues, ballads, and native airs that permeated their times and gave impetus to any musician, knowingly or not, who picks a string today. Mance Lipscomb (1895-1976), the son of a former slave, lived almost his whole life in Navasota, Texas, supporting himself and his family by tenant farming. But he was also a guitar player and songster who played blues and rags for his neighbors at local Saturday night parties. In 1960 Mance was "discovered." Within a short period of time he was recording albums and performing around the country. This video presents a rare 1969 television concert.

Few men have done as much to spread the music of the Spanish guitar as the late Celedonio Romero, whose love for the instrument spanned its modern history. His musical legacy lives on in the legendary quartet he formed with his sons Celin, Pepe and Angel, and continues with grandsons Celino and Lito.

Celedonio Romero, a noted guitar virtuoso and gifted composer from Malaga, Spain braved civil war and artistic oppression to become the patriarch of a family of brilliant guitar soloists, and the creator of the world’s first guitar quartet. With inimitable grace and gorgeous music, the film provides insight into the colorful history of the classical guitar through the life and times of one of the premier families in music.

Los Romeros: The Royal Family of the Guitar has aired in two National PBS prime time “specials”and was nominated for an EMMY.
