Introduction
The 'JAM WITH ...' series, is a powerful learning tool that will help you
extend your stockpile of licks and fills and develop your improvisational skills. The combination
of musical notation and guitar tablature in the book together with backing tracks on the CD gives
you the opportunity to learn each track note for note and then jam with a professional session
band. The track listing reflects some of The Eagles' most popular recordings, providing
something for guitarists to have fun with and improvise with, as well as something to aspire to.
The first eight tracks on the CD are full length backing tracks recorded minus lead guitar. The
remaining tracks feature the backing tracks with the lead guitar parts added. Although many of
you will have all the original tracks in your own collection, we have provided them in the package
for your reference. The 'JAM WITH ...' series allows you to accurately recreate the original, or to
use the transcriptions in this book in conjunction with the backing tracks as a basis for your own
improvisation. For your benefit we have put definite endings on the backing tracks, rather than
fading these out as is the case on some of the original recordings. The accompanying
transcriptions correspond to our versions. Remember, experimenting with your own ideas is
equally important for developing your own style; most important of all however is that you enjoy
JAM with THE EAGLES and HAVE FUN!
From the Mid-1970s to the start of the 1980s The Eagles held sway as one of the great rock
bands of the decade. But while rock was the group's forte, they blended elements of folk and
country into many of their songs. The Eagles evolved from the folk and countryrock
movement that sprang up in Southern California in the late '60s and early '70s. None of the
four founding members were native Californians, but all eventually settled in Los Angeles
because of the musical environment.
Bernie Leadon had a huge interest in folk music which caused him to learn guitar and banjo
before he reached his teens. Leadon played with local groups in Florida in the mid-1960s
before heading to Los Angeles in 1967, where he worked with a series of groups in the late
'60s. Rand Meisner's career began in his teens with local groups in the Midwest. Later, in
Los Angeles, he was a founding member of Poco with Richie Furay and Jim Messina.
Glenn Frey grew up in the more frenetic pace of urban Detroit and after dropping out of
college, he moved to Los Angeles. Hanging out at the Troubadour club, he became
acquainted with Don Henley. Henley liked to play drums, but wasn't sure of his career
direction. He finally heeded the advice of an English teacher that music suited him best and
he headed for the 'big time' in Los Angeles. Frey meanwhile was trying to use some of his
songs as a wedge for a solo career and got the chance to play some to David Geffen, then
manager of Joni Mitchell and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Geffen discouraged the solo
approach and told Frey to join a band. Heeding this, Frey accepted a job with Linda
Ronstadt, and as the band needed a drummer he looked up Henley. The two proved highly
compatible, and on the first night of the Ronstadt tour they agreed to start their own band.
The band, in effect, took shape around them. Ronstadt's manager, John Boylan, brought in
Randy Meisner on bass guitar and also recruited Bernie Leadon on lead guitar.
Helped by strong recommendation from Jackson Browne, the group got Geffen as their first
manager and he financed the band so they could move to Aspen, Colorado, to rehearse, write
songs, and polish their act in local clubs. Meanwhile, Geffen managed to get Freya release
from Amos Records and lined up a recording contract with Asylum. In early 1972, he
arranged for the band to go to England to work on their debut LP under the direction of ...

Like many seventies records, some of the solo work here is played through a phase-shifter
giving some of the playing a very liquid sound.
The solo work is all based around the B minor pentatonic scale (B,D,E,F#,A) incorporating
occasional notes to fit with certain chords; eg when the F# major chord comes in for the first
time the solo guitar plays a Bb to fit perfectly over the chord which contains a Bb. This
approach is known as 'playing over the changes' and involves thinking not so much what key
you are in, but what chord you are in, using the overall context of the B minor pentatonic. The
famous harm'onies follow the harmony of the backing chords very closely, but great care
should be taken to keep the phrasing 'tight' between the two harmony guitars.

Life In The Fast Lane
This song is played with an overdrive sound - though not too over driven - and was probably
played on a Gibson Les Paul through one of Joe Walsh's hot-rodded Fender Twin Reverb
amplifiers. The main theme is introduced, then doubled an octave higher. As with all
harmony or doubling work it is important to keep the phrasing identical on the two guitars.
During the verse a multitude of guitars play different parts. The key to using this approach is
not to allow anyone part to be too loud in the nix, but to link with the others equally in the
listener's mind. Later in the song some heavy riffing happens, based around an Echard -
accented by the drums and the rest of the band. The solo is played using a slide or
bottleneck - remember when using a slide to play directly above the fret required and always
mute behind the slide, to stop the sound from becoming messy. The solo work is based
around the B major pentatonic scale, but uses several 'chromatic passing tones' - notes which
fit in a faster context to join ideas but not when sustained individually.

One Of These Nights
An atmospheric introduction on bass and guitar, layering up different parts leads to a sudden
harmony part played on another pair of guitars (this part could be played on one guitar). The
general feel of the track is very funky, with minimalistic work from a clean rhythm guitar. The
harmony guitars join in occasionally for an embellishment.
The solo is played with an overdriven sound and a funky style again. It may take some
practice to execute some of these phrases perfectly at first, especially in succession, or even
two bent notes as happens quite early in the solo which uses the E minor pentatonic scale
(E,G,A,B,D), however to follow a more melodic path some notes are added especially to fit
with certain chords; eg a e is used over the A minor chord which contains A,e and E. It
would be possible to solo over the chords without adding these extra notes, but would not
sound as interesting. Overall, it's important to keep short notes and chords in this track
percussive - maybe even exaggerating this until it comes naturally.

Tequila Sunrise
Beginning with acoustic guitar - soon joined by a clean electric playing bent notes and double
stops through a slight tremelo effect - this part is quite inventive in it's use of string bends and
though it requires practice to play this kind of part smoothly, it is very rewarding. The solo
section is played on acoustic guitar using double stops over open strings making this a solo
that could possibly stand on its own with no backing! It is based around the G major scale
(G,A,B,e,D,E,F#,G) with some chromatic movement (movement by steps) between the notes
of the scale.

EVERLY BROTHERS GUITAR SERIES TABLATURE LIBRO Bye Bye Love Wake Up, Little Susie

EVERLY BROTHERS, GUITAR ANTHOLOGY SERIES. TABLATURE

The Everly Brothers began their climb to pop music immortality in the small town of Brownie, Kentucky. As children of mid-western country stars Ike and Margaret Everly, they were exposed to music in a big way and appeared frequently on their parents' 1940's radio show. In 1955, the teenaged Phil and Don left for Nashville and landed a song-writing gig with Roy Acuff's publishing company. With the release of "Bye Bye, Love" in the fall of 1957, the Everly Brothers were on their way to become the reigning kings of pop music. The song became an international smash and established the Everly's style of close country harmonies over a rock beat.
Over the next five years the Everly Brothers produced a hit record every three months, often topping the pop, country, and r&b charts simultaneously. They established themselves as the premier purveyors of a unique rock 'n roll, country, blues and gospel blend with songs like "('Til) I Kissed You," (written by Don), "When Will I Be Loved" (penned by Phil), "All I Have to Do Is Dream," and "Wake Up Little Susie," which sold over two million copies in the U.S. alone. In 1960, they signed with Warner Bros. Records and recorded their biggest single ever, "Cathy's Clown," which also sold over two million copies in the U.S. alone. During that incredible period of hit-making, the Everlys sold millions upon millions of records world-wide and influenced the sound of popular music for all time.
While Don and Phil were in the marines during 1962, their moving song, "Crying In The Rain," was in the Top Ten. Later on, their magnificent Roots album (released in 1968), received vast critical acclaim and sparked a new interest in the group. The album triggered a rejuvenation for the Everlys as performers, enough to make the albums that followed - "Stories We Could Tell" and "Pass The Chicken And Listen" (their final release of the 70's) - successful as well. The Everlys gave their last performance in July 1973, marking the end of an era.
Ten years and eight solo albums between them followed, then a dramatic, emotion-filled reunion concert at London's Royal Albert Hall in September 1983 returned the Everly Brothers to their rightful place in contemporary music. "It was as if they had never been away," enthused People magazine in a review of the resulant HBO special.
The excitement generated by the Everly Brothers live reunion, however, merely set the stage for their "comeack" and the phenomenally successful Reunion Concert Tour, which helped create a new popularity for the duo akin to their unbridled success in the 1950's and 60's. Their resurgence delighted fans new and old. 1985 saw another major tour by the Everlys (taking them throughout the United States, Great Britain and Australia), and the release of a spate of reissues and compilations of Everly Brothers classics. The brothers were back for sure, and more than ready to step into the future. Today the Everly Brothers rank as a consistent touring group, habi!ually selling out halls across the U.S., Great Britain and Australia. They are also among the first ten inductees recently voted into the Rock and Roll all of Fame. The Everlys are without a doubt one of the few original rock groups to remain a viable, evoluting unit. Don and Phil Everly, once and forever a cornerstone of popular music, are making their presence strongly felt in the Nineties. As Don says, "As long as it continues to be as much fun as it's been, we'll go on. Our reunion has been a gift ... you can call it manna from heaven."

FAITH NO MORE THE REAL THING GUITAR TABLATURE LIBRO-Epic-Underwater Love-The Morning After

FAITH NO MORE, THE REAL THING. Sono di San Francisco e il loro strano e originale incrocio di "strade" rap, jazz, funk, metal, di questo album del 1989, sembra rispecchiare i caratteri di ogni componente del gruppo. TABLATURE

AUTHORIZED EDITION GUITAR for the Practicing Musician

FAITH NO MORE

There's a new wave of bands emerging to divert the course of rock music for the 90's. They share a common thread-they take chances, eschew the obvious, and refuse to bow down to formulas. They explore a wider range of influences and sonic tangents than most of their contemporaries, resulting in a far richer final product, artistically and conceptually. King's X is such a band. So is Tesla. And so is San Francisco's Faith No More.
Their sound has been described as eclectic, though it is more-polymorphic, uncategorizable. Successfully merging a plethora of seemingly incongruous styles, it is-depending on which track you hear-thrash or heavy metal, rap, power pop, experimental psychedelia, textural modern rock or even revisited nostalgia. The band was formed in the early 80's around the kinetic rhythm section of drummer Mike Borodin (who had been digesting African rhythms in addition to standard hard rock and metal grooves) and punk-funk bassist Bill Gould. Classically trained keyboardist Roddy Bottum was inducted by Gould; the two had known each other since grade school in L.A. This core trio persevered until they joined forces with guitarist Jim Martin and vocalist Chuck Mosley. The fusion of punk, rap and metal was heard as early as their first offering, "We Care a Lot,"which achieved national recognition as a hit 12-inch dance single, of all things. The song was rerecorded for their 1987 debut, Introduce Yourself. By the time the third LP was to be recorded (1988), they had fired Mosley, and proceeded to hit the studio without a lead singer, building the tracks as instrumental backdrops for the "vocalist to be named later." Enter Mike Patton (formerly of Mr. Bungle), who wrote all the lyrics for the songs in two weeks, and provided the unusual vocal approach which was to redefine the band's sound. The definitive Faith No More was born by December 1988, and was unleashed on the world in their appropriately titled 1989 release, The Real Thing.
The music on this record surpasses all their previous work in terms of sophistication, adventurousness and sheer diversity. Consider the expansion of the punklsci-fi power pop genre (as exemplified in the mid 80's by Billy Idol and Steve Stevens) in such pieces as "From Out of Nowhere," "The Real Thing" and "Underwater Love." Here the futuristic synth/textural trappings are beautifully held in check by Martin's metal-edged power chords, galloping rhythm riffs (as in the title track) and ultra-fat, distorted guitar tone. This allows the synthesized and sampled keyboard parts-which normally undermine the rock impact of most contemporary bands-to contribute meaningfully to the sonic whole.
"Epic" celebrates the marriage of rap music and heavy metal. Verses are dominated by the characteristic rhythmical considerations of the rap style (sparse, repetitive percussion figures on drums and bass and a monotone vocal chant spoken as much as sung), while heavy rhythm guitar riffs provide a well-conceived contrast in the choruses, bridge and outro. Check out the thick palm muting and power chording of Rhy. Figs. 3 & 4 as well as the Randy Rhoads-inspired intervallic shapes found in the last bar of Rhy. Fig. 2 (containing chromatically ascending stacks of fourths and tritones).
Allusions to the speed metal/thrash genre are heard in "Surprise! You're Dead!" and "Zombie Eaters." In "Surprise!," one can detect a number of unmistakable traits: heavily accented, dissonant chromatic riffs, multiple meter changes, use of the Phrygian mode, lockstep ensemble passages throughout, and vocals ranging from a raspy monotone to overanxious Halfordesque shouting and demented laughter. "Zombie Eaters" combines light acoustic textures (Rhy. Figs. 1- 7) with aggressive heavy metal sounds (Riff A, for instance). Note also the unusual blend of synth pads and metal chords during Rhy. Fig. 8. The closing cod etta is a bizarre reworking of the immortal "Stairway to Heaven" chord intro, transformed into an equally evocative Faith No More moment. "Falling to Pieces" fuses a variety of influences. The rhythmic intro of pocketed bass and drums recalls the space funk of Parliament-Funkadelic, while the verse lays down an animated groove in the vein of Led Zeppelin (see Rhy. Fig. 1), complemented still further by the Van Halenesque triad comping in the second section of the verses (bars 9-12). The outro is purely textural, with keyboards adding coloristic arpeggiations over a funky bass/drums ostinato-the section seeming to grow organically from the power pop, hooky, outchorus vamp.
"Edge of the World," "Woodpeckers from Mars" and "War Pigs" represent three distinctly different musical directions handled by Faith No More with remarkable ease. "Edge" invokes a vintage 40's50's r&b/jazz mood, complete with bluesy acoustic piano accompaniment and ad-libbing, an implied shuffle pulse (slow 12/8), sax/horn section colors and hipster fingersnaps. The ingenuous minor/seventh (both Am and A7 as tonic) blues changes and nostalgic arrangement lend an eerie touch. "Woodpeckers from Mars" (and why not?) creates a surreal instrumental soundscape of otherworldly images evoked in the curious opening resonant synth riff (Riff A), intriguing ethnic main melody (based on the E Phrygian-Dominant scale: E F G# ABC D), and the twisted avante garde guitar effects in the 4/4 section, the latter providing an aleatoric interlude of frenzied and chaotic guitar noise instead of the predictable guitar solo of instrumental rock music. But then, Faith No More is hardly predictable-the only thing predictable is their unpredictability. "War Pigs" reappraises the metal roots of the band. Faith No More expands on the Black Sabbath classic in terms of modern recording sonics and technique, using a bigger, heavier 80's tone, but still remaining faithful to the details of the composition-reflected particularly in the paraphrase recreation of the signature Tony lommi guitarwork (even down to the overlapped double solos). For the studio and live stage, guitarist Jim Martin keeps his equipmentdeceptivelysimple. His main guitar is a 1971 Gibson Flying V, personalized with a chrome pickguard and truss rod cover. It is fitted with a Kahler tremolo system and a DiMarzio Super Distortion humbucker in the bridge position. Another Gibson V and a Les Paul round out the electric guitar line-up. These are played into three ancient Morley pedals (Power-Wah-Fuzz, Volume Depressor and an Echo-Chorus- Vibrato) and then straight into Marshall amps. Two acoustics, a banjo and a mandolin augment the guitar/string arrangements as needed.
