KING FREDDIE, IN CONCERT DALLAS, TEXAS 1973. DVD

KING FREDDIE, IN CONCERT DALLAS, TEXAS 1973. DVD

Product Description:
On January 20, 1973, Freddie King and a tight quartet performed at a TV studio in Dallas, Texas. "It was humming in there," recalls director Jim Rowley. "Absolutely cooking." King was 38 and enjoying what he called "the Fillmore circuit" in America as well as the adulation of throngs (including adoring rock stars) in Europe, especially England. This was the second time King had the brass ring firmly in hand, the first being during the early 1960s "dance party" era and his success with Hide Away. It all ended too soon with King's 1976 death but he left us a vibrant musical legacy which includes concert performances like this, a stunning example of a blues master coming to triumphant terms with 1970s African-American grooves and "playing funky."

KING FREDDIE, THE!!!! BEAT 1966. DVD

KING FREDDIE, THE!!!! BEAT 1966. DVD

Product Description:
Freddie King, hard-driving and perhaps driven, was only 42 when he died on December 28, 1976. The intensity of the performances in this video suggest an artist who burned at full throttle every time he played. Guitarists as diverse as Eric Clapton, Michael Bloomfield, and Jerry Garcia have cited King as a formative influence. Most of the clips in this collection come from a unique time warp, a fleeting moment when Southern R&B collided with mid-60's "Mod" and rendered a show called THE!!!!BEAT. THE!!!!BEAT'S 26-show run in 1966 may have been ahead of its time. The time is one when television programming for black audiences was otherwise nonexistent and blues remained a powerful force in Southern black popular music. Freddie King was 31 at the time of THE!!!BEAT, playing and singing in prime form. This video/DVD collection presents all of Freddie King's appearances from this unique series. The presentation concludes with three tunes performed in Sweden in 1973 and shows Freddie's artistic growth. The booklet for the DVD is not included, but can be accessed and downloaded from guitarvideos.com. Running time: 60 minutes.

HOPKINS LIGHTNIN', RARE PERFORMANCES, 1960-1979. DVD

HOPKINS LIGHTNIN', RARE PERFORMANCES, 1960-1979. 24 Blues songs elettriche e acustiche. 60 Minuti. DVD

Product Description:
Texas has given the world generations of extraordinary blues singer-guitarists, of whom none made a deeper impression than Sam "Lightnin'" Hopkins (1912-1982). The stunning impact of his charismatic performances comes fully to lie in this DVD tracing Lightnin's career subsequent to his rediscovery in 1959. In 1960 German filmmaker Dietrich Wawzyn captured Lightnin' on his Houston home turf, and the clips here of him performing on the street and in a Houston bar are rare glimpses into his milieu (and the earliest known footage of Hopkins). Seven years later, a relaxed Lightnin' delivered engaging folk-blues performances for Seattle folklorists, five of which appear here. In 1970 he painted a masterful and entertaining musical self-portrait in eight songs from the Los Angeles PBS show Boboquivari. Finally, Lightnin's "lion in winter" appearance on Austin City Limits in 1979 shows a still-powerful country bluesman disproving the old dog/new tricks adage with a Stratocaster and wah-wah pedal! A 28-page booklet featuring biographical material, rare photographs

GREAT GUITARS OF JAZZ. BYRD, FARLOW, ELLIS. DVD

GREAT GUITARS OF JAZZ. BYRD, FARLOW, ELLIS. 80 minuti. DVD

Product Description:
Herb Ellis, the late Tal Farlow, and Charlie Byrd exemplify the breadth of American jazz. These elder statesmen of the guitar shared well over a century of combined knowledge and experience with styles covering a vast spectrum of the music, from straight-ahead swing and be-bop to bossa nova and beyond. The thread that bound these radically different players was their debt to Charlie Christian, the first electric jazz guitarist and the common inspiration for their lifelong dedication to musical excellence. Billed as the Great Guitars, a performance by this remarkable group offered a crash course in the history of jazz guitar. Selection include: Seven Come Eleven; Angel Eyes; and many more.
