Moraíto, the most important representative of the modern school of Jerez and undoubtedly one of the best accompanying guitarists for cante, plays and explains in the first part of this video five selected pieces from his repertoire: two Bulerías, Sevillanas, Tangos and Vals-Bulerías. The second part is devoted to Moraíto's speciality: together with singer Fernando Terremoto Moraíto focusses on basic principles and difficulties of the accompaniment of cante using Malagueñas, Seguiriyas and Tientos/Tangos. Fernando Terremoto, son of the legendary cantaor Terremoto, is gifted with one of the most outstanding flamenco voices of the young flamenco generation. In this video he gives ample proof that he lives up to his nickname Terremoto, "Earthquake": his cante is an expression of unique profundity, overwhelming and subtle at the same time. For the first time, a video affords advanced guitarists an insight into a not easily accessible sphere of the flamenco guitar: the great art of accompaniment of cante. VHS PAL/NTSC, 80'

Preface

"iEI Flamenco no se aprende en librosr'. This widespread opinion may
have shaken the self-confidence of many an aficionado. Of course it is not
possible to learn either the art of flamenco or a foreign language exclusively
from books and yet they are a very important tool. The ideal solution is, in
any case, - both for a language student and a student of the flamenco
guitar - to stay in the country in question which, in our case, is Spain.
It is quite understandable that taking lessons from a qualified teacher
regularly is not always possible. And what is more, the few musical editions
that exist are not a great help either. Above all about modern flamenco
literature is very scarce.
"LA GUITARRA FLAMENCA", an audiovisual teaching method, suitable for
both beginners and advanced students, has evolved through our own
experience on this long and stony way.
Above all in flamenco it is very important to both hear and see the
techniques. The combination of video, music and tablature as offered by
"LA GUITARRA FLAMENCA", supplies the ideal basic requirements for
successful learning. Besides, it surely is a real treat for every aficionado to
be able to watch the masters of flamenco guitar in action.
This video affords guitarists an insight into the accompaniment of conte for
the first time. please note the following remarks:
The accompaniment of conte requires a great deal of intuition as well as an
excellent knowledge of the palos flamencos. In order to acquire the
necessary experience a guitarist should listen to as many singers as possible
and, whenever possible, accompany them.
We have transcribed the music as closely as possible to the original; all the
same, we would like to make a few observations concerning this point:
- Flamenco is continually being taught and learnt without written music;
it therefore keeps its flexibility and spontaneity. But this also means that
a piece of music is never played quite the same twice. Music and

tablature refer to the original version, played in its entirety and at
normal speed. It may happen that the slow version diverges in some
detail from the original version. Do not let this confuse you. On the
contrary, it may encourage you to include your own ideas.
The notation of the different kinds of rosgueos is explained on the
following page. As they are easily recognizable by the special form
of the noteheads, in the tablature which does not contain any
rhythmical specifications, only the first chord is noted.
In the pieces with conte we have noted the introductions and the
folsetos between the verses. As Moralto repeatedly states, there are
no strict rules in the accompaniment of conte; the guitarist must listen
to the singer and anticipate the appropriate chord (for further
information on the accompaniment of conte see also "LA GUITARRA
FLAMENCA de Merengue de Cordoba").
A typical feature of the Buleda de Jerez is the remote on the 6th
instead of on the 10th beat, i.e. the second half of the compos is
dropped. Where such passages occur in the score, a line contains
only two bars (instead of four).
We hope that this video provides a helpful incentive for all passionate
Flamenco guitarists hoping to make progress in the arduous and
fascinating art of the flamenco guitar.

Moraito
Manuel Moreno Junquera "Moralto" was born in the Barrio Santiago in Jerez de la
Frontera in 1956. Mo ra Ito, son of Juan Morao and nephew of Manuel Morao,
important guitarists of the Jerez school, started his career at a very tender age in 1966,
taking part in the "Jueves Flamencos" organised by his uncle Manuel Morao. In 1980
he became a member of the ensemble of the tablao "Los Canasteros" in Madrid.
the participation in the "III Cumbre Flamenca de Madrid" in 1986 was certainly a
milestone in his artistic career.
Moralto, undoubtedly one of the best accompanying guitarists for cante, has worked
with all the great singers. His talent was rewarded with the most sought-after prizes,
among them the "Premio Maximo del Concurso Nacional de Guitarra Flamenca de la
Pena Los Cernkalos de Jerez de la Frontera" (1972 and 1986) as well as the "Copa
Jerez", awarded by the "Catedra de Flamencologia y Estudios Folkloricos Andaluces"
(1981 and 1983). He also triumphed as soloist: in 1992 his album "Morao y Oro"
was awarded the "Grand Prix de l'Academie du Disque Franc;:ais" in Paris.
Moralto, eminent patron of young talents, is today the most important representative of
the modern school of Jerez. Above all his Bulerias - Jerez style par excellence - stand
out for their unequalled, brilliant swing.

Fernando Terremoto
Femando Fernandez Pantoja "Fernando Terremoto" was born in 1969 in Jerez de la
Frontera. The son of the legendary cantaor Fernando Fernandez Monje "Terremoto"
started his career as a guitarist when he was 13 years old. In 1989 he started singing
in public at the "Centro Cultural Don Antonio Chacon", accompanied by Moralto. In
1990 he became a member of the ensemble of the tablao "La Zambra" in Madrid.
Gifted with an extraordinary flamenco voice, his decision to turn to cante proved right .
Fernando Terremoto is today one of the most sought-after young cantaores; he works
with the best accompanying guitarists such as Moralto, Tomatito, Juan Habichuela.
His outstanding talent was rewarded with the most prestigious awards. At the "Bienal
de Sevilla" in 1996 he won the "Primer Premio de Cante" and at the "Concurso
Nacional de Arte Flamenco de Cordoba" in 1998 he triumphed winning prizes in three
categories. To date, his discography comprises "La herencia de la sangre" (1989),
"Cante de la Campina" (1991) and "Cosa natural" (1997).
His cante, expression ofa unique profundity, overwhelming and subtle atthe same time,
is ample proof that he lives up to his nickname Terremoto, "Earthquake".

Paco Serrano, the winner of the "Concurso Nacional de la Guitarra Flamenca de Córdoba" is one of the few top flamenco guitarists who still dedicate part of their time to tuition. In this video Paco Serrano explains the different techniques of the flamenco guitar (pulgar, rasgueado, arpegio, trémolo, alzapúa, ligados) with reference to Soleá. Each falseta is played at normal speed and then slowly. The point of departure being the rhythm of Soleá, the student step by step learns more about Alegrías, Bulerías, Tangos, Tarantas, as well as exceptional techniques like a seven-note-tremolo, special rasgueos and much more. In the second part, Paco plays a few of his concert pieces. Surely, this final section may serve as an incentive to even the most advanced guitarists to develop their own ideas. VHS PAL/NTSC, 50'
