WOLF HOWLIN', FEATURING HUBERT SUMLIN ON GUITAR. TABLATURE

WOLF HOWLIN', FEATURING HUBERT SUMLIN ON GUITAR. TABLATURE

Featuring Hubert Sumlin on Guitar
Series: Guitar Recorded Version TAB
Artist: Howlin' Wolf
Transcribed: KENN CHIPKIN, JOHN GARWOOD, FRED SOKOLOW

In West Memphis, Wolf put together a dynamic band that consisted of Willie Johnson and Matt
Murphy on guitars, Willie Steel on drums, Junior Parker on harmonica and a pianist called Bill
"Destruction" Johnson. Wolf blew harp and played electric guitar, and his combo swung as loud
and hard as any band in the Delta. Along with Muddy Waters and Elmore James, he was inventing
the modem blues-rock genre.
Willie Lee Johnson, (born March 4, 1923 in Senatobia, Mississippi,) came to Wolf's band with a
distinct, powerful style. His electric sound was raw and distorted, like Wolf's voice. His singlenote
solos and slashing chords raised the excitement quotient of the band. On "House Rockin'
Boogie" Wolf cried out, "Play that guitar, Willie Johnson, 'til it smoke ...Blow your top!" His
raunchy tone and aggressive solos established him as a pioneer in rock guitar history. (Paul
Burlison, rockabilly pioneer who played with Johnny Burnette and the Rock and Roll Trio,
learned to get tube distortion playing Johnson's amp; he sometimes sat in for Johnson on Wolf's
KWEM daytime radio show, because Johnson had to plow the fields in the daytime!
Wolf's band played all over the South for years, and performed regularly on radio, building a
following. In 1951, Sam Phillips heard Wolf on the radio and declared "This is for me. This is
where the soul of man never dies." Sun Records, Phillips' company that first recorded Elvis
Presley, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis and other rock legends, did not yet exist,
but Phillips was recording "race" artists and leasing the masters to companies like Chess in
Chicago and the Bihari Brothers' RPM Records in Los Angeles. A visionary where American
roots music is concerned, Phillips singled out Wolf as one of his favorite deep, soulful singers.
Wolf and his band came to Memphis and recorded "Moanin' At Midnight" and "How Many
More Years," with pianist Ike Turner sitting in on the session. It was a double-sided hit. At the
age of forty-one, Wolf had his first top ten R&B record ...on the Chess label.
Ike Turner was a band leader, talent scout and A&R man for the Biharis, and Wolf became the
object of a dispute between RPM and Chess that ended when he signed with Chess and, soon
after, moved to Chicago. Muddy Waters introduced him to the club owners, and before long
Waters and Wolf were fierce rivals. They were the two most dynamic blues singers in Chicago,
both fronting seminal blues/rock bands, and both, incidentally, recording Willie Dixon tunes as
well as originals and blues standards. Their rivalry continued for decades: Willie Dixon once
said that if Wolf ever balked at recording a Dixon song, the songwriter would mention that
Waters was interested in cutting it (or vice versa).
At first, Wolf recorded with Chess regulars like pianist Otis Spann, bassist/songwriter/ arranger
Willie Dixon and drummer Earl Phillips. After a few years and many personnel changes, Wolf
recruited Willie Johnson from West Memphis, along with the other main guitarist in the Wolf
story, Hubert Sumlin.
Born in Greenwood, Mississippi on November 16, 1931, Sumlin was just a boy when he first
met Wolf and saw him perform. In 1954, he was working with blues harpist James Cotton, when
Wolf's job offer lured him to Chicago. Sumlin remained with Wolf (outside of a brief stint with
Muddy Waters) for twenty years, in an unusually close, almost father-son relationship. At first he
played rhythm guitar to Jody Williams' lead (his first recording with Wolf was the 1953 session
that produced "All Night Boogie"), but gradually Sumlin took over as lead guitarist and found
that he could think like Wolf, musically, and perfectly complement Wolf's voice and persona.
Robbie Robertson, Eric Clapton and many other artists have acknowledged Sumlin's impact on
their musical development. His taut, angular solos and backup licks are part of blues/rock
history.

Artist: Francisco Tárrega

Considered the father of modern classical guitar, Francisco Tárrega revolutionized guitar technique and composed a wealth of music that will be a cornerstone of classical guitar repertoire for centuries to come. This unique book/CD pack features 14 of his most outstanding pieces in standard notation and tab, edited and performed on CD by virtuoso Paul Henry, plus bios of Tárrega and Henry. 64 pages.

FRANCISCO T ARREGA
(b.1852 Villareal, Spain - d.1909 Barcelona, Spain)
The pieces in this collection represent the genius of Francisco Tarrega, the "father" of the modern
classical guitar. Each one of these compositions are classical guitar masterpieces, forming one of
the greatest artistic and technical cornerstones of classical guitar repertoire. They represent the
wide range of style, techniques, musical forms, and timbre that was the mastery of Tarrega. Even
the shorter pieces, such as Lagrima, Pavana, and Prelude, although not technically virtuosic works,
require a thoughtful approach and keen sense of timing to capture the dramatic shadings of the
melodies and accompaniments.
Tarrega's longer pieces, such as Capricho A.rabe, have these same musical challenges yet have
further virtuosic demands. These compositions, as do most of his works, blend traditional Spanish
melodies and rhythms with the Romantic style that was still so popular during Tarrega's time. The
Mazurkas, Maria and Adelita, are reminiscent of the works of Chopin. Besides being a virtuoso
guitarist, Tarrega was also an excellent pianist. Early in his career he often performed half of a
concert on piano and the other half on guitar. This intimacy with the jewels of the piano repertoire
influenced his own work as a composer, and undoubtedly inspired him to transcribe many compositions
for the guitar by composers such as Chopin, Beethoven, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Handel,
Bach, and others. The Maria (Gavota) and Gran Vals are suggestive of some of those composers, in
both spirit and form.
Part of Tarrega's genius was his sophisticated and innovative approach to left hand fingering;
blending melody and accompaniment throughout the fingerboard, thus bringing out the full range
of tone colors and dynamic possibilities of the larger modern day guitar which became popular in
Spain during Tarrega's lifetime.
As with all great composers, the bulk of Tarrega's compositions seem to place musical ideas rather
than technical showmanship in the forefront. However, as exhibited in his Estudio Brillante and La
Alborada (Musicbox), he shows that virtuosity and musical ideas can be best of friends. And, in
the Gran Jota, he takes an extra leap reminiscent of Paganinni by stringing together a collection of
themes and unashamedly displaying nearly every possible guitaristic effect. In perhaps his bestknown
work, Recuerdos de la Alhambra, Tarrega defines his magnificant contribution to classical
guitar repertoire; although using the glimmering tremolo technique, he never allows the technique
itself it to overshadow the absolutely stunning Spanish melody.
Francisco Tarrega - composer, guitarist, pianist, and teacher. He created an artistic legacy that not
only profoundly influenced his contemporaries, but one which has left an indelible mark on each
succeeding generation of guitarists.

INTRODUCTION
Chet Atkins holds a place in musical history reserved for a very select few. His contributions to country music are inestimable, as is his influence on guitar players worldwide.
Simply put, country music would not be the same today if it weren't for Chet. Quite likely the most recorded instrumentalist in the history of popular music, his guitar playing has graced the records of Elvis Presley, The Everly Brothers, Hank Williams, Jerry Reed, and Les Paul, to name but a few. Originally a disciple of fingerstyle legend Merle Travis, Chefs groundbreaking guitar work throughout his recording career of over fifty years has in turn influenced the styles of such notable players as Mark Knopfler, Eric Johnson, and George Harrison. And although his virtuosity on the instrument is well acknowledged, his talents were not limited to the guitar alone. As a producer for RCA records, he is often credited as single-handedly creating the "Nashville Sound" as we know it today, fusing the twang of traditional country with a pop sensibility. His list of producer credits reads like a "who's who" in popular country music, including Patsy Cline, Waylon Jennings, Charley Pride, Elvis Presley, and Jerry Reed. He also discovered and/or signed such legendary artists as Dolly Parton, Ronnie Milsap, Willie Nelson, and Steve Wariner.
Chester Burton Atkins was born on June 20, 1924, in Luttrell, Tennessee, about twenty miles northeast of Knoxville. His first musical influence was his older brother Jim, a highly accomplished guitar player who eventually went on to play with Les Paul. Chefs parents separated when he was ten, and he moved to Georgia to live with his father, a music teacher and song leader for several traveling evangelists. At his brother's suggestion, the fiddle became Chefs first instrument, but it wasn't long before he acquired a Sears Silvertone guitar and started learning to play it. He advanced rapidly, and by the time he left high school in 1941 at age seventeen, he had made up his mind to make a career for himself in music.
Chefs sophisticated style was a tough sell at first. He held a few performance slots at various radio stations in Knoxville and eventually Cincinnati, but he was often dismissed because his style wasn't "hillbilly" enough. During this time, while working at WLW with the duo Homer and Jethro, Chet met his future wife, Leona Johnson. They married in 1946. Later that year, Atkins finally received a break when, in support of Red Foley, he made his first appearance at the Grand Ole Opry, where his ear-grabbing style was greatly appreciated. Several more radio positions followed in Virginia and Missouri, but in 1947, with the birth of his first daughter and poor job prospects, Chet moved back to Knoxville to work with Homer and Jethro at WNOX. Eventually, a tape of Chefs radio performances was sent to RCA Victor's office in Chicago and made its way to Steve Sholes, the label's head of country music. After receiving a call from Sholes, Chet moved the family to
Nashville.
Sholes was greatly impressed by Chefs playing and put him to work immediately; Chet was featured on nearly every recording session of 1949. Mother Maybelle and the Carter Sisters hired him a year later as a regular on the Grand Ole Opry, signaling that Chet had officially arrived in Nashville. During this time, Chefs playing wound up on records by Hank Williams ("Cold, Cold Heart" and "Jambalya"), The Louvin Brothers ("When I Stop Dreaming"), The Carlisles ("Too Old to Cut the Mustard" and "No Help Wanted"), Kitty Wells ("Release Me" and "Repenting"), and many more. When Sholes could not make the sessions because of other business, Chet was allowed to produce them himself.
By the mid-fifties, Chet was producing thirty artists a year as well as recording his own albums for RCA. His 1954 debut album, Chet Atkins and His Galloping Guitar, produced his hit instrumental version of "Mister Sandman" and included his now-classic "Country Gentleman." A signature model Gretsch guitar was developed bearing Chefs name; it eventually became a huge seller in the early sixties when George Harrison made it his guitar of choice with the Fab Four. Chet played on Elvis Presley's historic RCA debut, "Heartbreak Hotel," in 1956, and provided the famous tremoloed electric guitar part on the Everly Brothers' "All I Have to Do Is Dream." He became to country guitar what James...
