Premessa dell'Autore

La maggior parte delle persone che calcano i palcoscenici cosiddetti "minori", cioè coloro che suonano per passione alle feste di paese, nei teatrini di provincia, nelle birrerie, ai matrimoni ecc. hanno in genere un grosso problema: sono magari dotate di ottima tecnica, hanno dedicato a volte molti anni allo studio della musica, alla sua applicazione ad uno strumento, ma ascoltate dal vivo lasciano spesso molto a desiderare. 

Questo perché se - come frequentemente succede - sono hobbysti che si sono concentrati appunto all'apprendimento della musica nei "ritagli" di tempo, dedicando la maggior parte delle loro energie all'acquisizione del bagaglio nozionistico e/o pratico che consenta loro di esercitare un mestiere "principale" il quale fornisca loro un reddito (parte del quale verrà poi speso in acquisto di strumenti musicali), non hanno potuto applicarsi nello studio - altrettanto importante - delle ferree regole e delle leggi fisiche che governano la propagazione del suono. Per mancanza oggettiva di tempo e perché quasi nulla è la letteratura (capibile da chi non sia un "iniziato") disponibile sull'argomento.

Anzi, molte volte questi utenti - influenzati dalle pubblicità sulle riviste di settore - acquistano prodotti in teoria ottimi, ma che poi o non sanno far funzionare in modo appropriato, oppure che non sono consoni alle loro effettive necessità. Ed i chitarristi sono i soggetti più esposti a questi rischi e a queste disavventure soprattutto perché l'amplificazione in senso stretto e l'amplificazione di una chitarra sono argomenti molto diversi, e su quest'ultima materia non esiste NIENTE che sia pubblicato.

Quindi quelle band che annoverino nel loro organico ottimi impiegati di banca, giornalisti impegnati, avvocati di grido, eccellenti idraulici o muratori, geniali designer, sarti creativi, carismatici rappresentanti di commercio -  e tutto questo quasi sempre in modo trasversale rispetto a barriere socio-culturali altrimenti difficilmente valicabili - raramente hanno al loro interno un membro che sia in grado di regolare un amplificatore in maniera ottimale e sappia perché un set-up vada fatto in un certo modo piuttosto che in un altro, al fine di ottenerne delle risposte invece che altre.

Questo lavoro viene normalmente ritenuto appannaggio dei tecnici di studio. 

Il risultato è che queste band, quando hanno la ventura di andare in sala d'incisione, di rado sanno spiegare agli addetti le loro reali esigenze in termini di suono, delegando alla (supposta) professionalità altrui il compito della formazione di una "voce" che dovrebbe essere loro peculiare caratteristica, fidandosi ciecamente delle interpretazioni e delle valutazioni (quantomai soggettive) che il tecnico dovrà fare, oltretutto basandosi su indicazioni espresse con un linguaggio spesso impreciso, se non a volte fumoso, criptico e contraddittorio. 

Ed il prodotto delle registrazioni è perciò per questi musicisti quasi sempre deludente. 

Non solo: quando si esibiscono dal vivo, questi gruppi hanno nella maggior parte dei casi suoni sgraziati e disequilibrati, dovuti l'incapacità dei singoli di regolare adeguatamente la loro strumentazione in relazione al "sound" degli altri membri dell'insieme e del luogo.

Questo libro è dunque specialmente dedicato ai chitarristi delle band di "secondo livello" che, pur non avendo una "Major" alle spalle che paghi per un codazzo di tecnici del suono che si muova al loro seguito e pur senza avere studi specificatamente dedicati, vogliano uscire in concerto con maggior cognizione di causa rispetto al come proporsi al loro auditorio, senza frastornarlo con pressioni sonore insostenibili e/o evitando che le performance di alcuni membri "scompaiano" all'interno delle sonorità espresse dal resto del gruppo.   

Quindi, al fine di rendere questa pubblicazione comprensibile ed usabile, ho deciso di suddividerla in tre parti principali che trattino ognuna di una delle tre più importanti fasi di cui la formazione del suono - da parte di un chitarrista elettrico - si compone, e che coprano quindi i seguenti stadi:

- La parte di suono che viene fornita dalla chitarra, con pagine specificatamente dedicate ai pick-up, ai potenziometri, ai condensatori, ai commutatori e, più in generale, all'elettronica applicata a questo strumento musicale, cioè a ciò che si trova "nella sua pancia". Ho fornito questa sezione di tanti più diagrammi di collegamenti standard quanti più mi è stato possibile racimolarne.

- La parte di suono dedicata agli "optional", ossia a tutti quegli apparecchi aggiuntivi - pedali o effetti rack - che possano coadiuvare un chitarrista nell'ottenere la "propria", riconoscibile "voce", o ad avere un ventaglio di sonorità disponibili che gli consentano, nell'ambito di una cover-band, di approcciare nel miglior modo possibile una vasta gamma di situazioni musicali diverse, col suono più appropriato ad ogni specifico genere.

- La parte di suono delegata all'amplificatore, dotata di tutte quelle informazioni (spero spiegate in termini comprensibili anche per chi non sia un ingegnere del suono o un fonico di studio) utili per avere delle nozioni di base che consentano di acquistare un apparecchio piuttosto che un'altro sulla base delle proprie esigenze invece che per condizionamento da pubblicità (che a volte sono un po'... imprecise, se non realmente ingannevoli), e buone per far capire come regolarlo e perché, al fine di ottenerne determinati toni.
