Russia has a deep and rich cultural tradition of artists, writers, musicians, and composers. The names "Tchaikovsky," "Mussorgsky," and "Rachmaninoff" may belong to the world, but these composers were Russian through and through. Guitar Atlas: Russia explores the country's remarkable musical heritage, covering everything from the music of Russian villages to the sacred tones and melodies adapted from ancient Byzantine modes. This will give you a deeper understanding and appreciation for a truly unique culture. Traditional Russian instruments, like the balalaika, domra, and seven-string guitar, are explained in detail, as well as the altered tunings and techniques designed to emulate them. Since folk music is such an integral part of Russian culture, this book explores familiar work songs, epic songs of the Russian bards, and romances of the Russian gypsies. Learning these songs will enrich your repertoire and give you insight into the music that has inspired some of the greatest artists and musicians in history. By the time you're done, you will have gained a fresh perspective into one of the world's greatest musical traditions and see that passion is at the heart of Russian music. The CD includes all the examples and demonstrations featured in the book.

Jamaican music is loved throughout the world for its laid-back feel as well as its intense, lively rhythms. Its influence is apparent across many musical styles, from reggae rhythms in the songs of popular bands like The Police, to ska beats in the music of groups such as The Mighty Mighty Bosstones and The Toasters. Even rap music evolved from the Jamaican vocal style called "toasting," and the influence of Bob Marley is evident throughout the world of music and pop culture.

Guitar Atlas: Jamaica teaches many of the styles that make Jamaican music so unique, from early movements like mento (the calypso-inspired style popular in the 1950s) to modern styles like dub (an electronic form of reggae). You’ll learn about the spiritual influence of the Rastafarian religion and explore the work of numerous Jamaican musicians, including Lord Flea, Count Lasher, The Maytals, The Skatalites, Lynn Taitt, Bob Marley, Black Uhuru, Ernest Ranglin, and many others. With a wealth of chordal and melodic ideas for the guitar, this book will improve your technique, increase your knowledge, and make you a more well-rounded musician.

Guitar Atlas:jamaica is an introduction to the rich musical tradition of
jamaica. From a guitarist's perspective, there is much to love in jamaican
music, especially the guitar-centric styles of mento, ska, rocksteady, and
reggae. In this book, the most important jamaican musicians, guitarists, styles,
and techniques are demonstrated through numerous musical examples. Most of these
examples are meant to be played with a pick, although there is some fingerpicking as
well. You will get the most from this book if you have experience reading standard
music notation and/or TAB, as well as some experience with common open chords,
barre chords, and basic guitar technique. The Notation Guide on page 3 should help
you with any unfamiliar notation. Welcome to Guitar Atlas: jamaica, and let's begin our journey!

JAMAICAN HISTORY
The island of jamaica is located in the Caribbean Sea. It is situated 90 miles south of
Cuba and is a part of the Greater Antilles, a group of islands that also incluJe~ Puerto
Rico and Hispaniola. With a tumultuous history of slavery, war, poverty, and natural
disasters, jamaica is a true melting pot of mixed ethnicities. jamaica is smaller than the
state of Connecticut, however, the global impact that this Caribbean island has had on
the rest of the world is enormous.
When Christopher Columbus first arrived to jamaica in 1494, the native Arawak people
(also known as Taino Indians) had already been there since 650 A.D. Sadly, soon after
Spain's occupation of the country began in 1509, the indigenous population was wiped
out by slavery, disease, and war. By 1655, Britain seized jamaica and soon, through
intense colonization and a booming slave trade, Jamaica became the largest producer
of sugar in the world. After many uprisings, slavery was abolished in 1838. In 1872,
Kingston became the capitol, and in 1962, jamaica became an independent nation.

JAMAICAN MUSIC OVERVIEW
In the early 19th century, when the percussive musical traditions brought over by West
Mrican slaves mixed with the music of the European quadrille (a precursor to the square
dance), the jamaican folk music style called mento was born. Mento was jamaica's most
popular music throughout the 1930s and 1940s; however, during this period, American
jazz also became immensely popular in jamaica. By the 1950s, mento was still alive,
but American R&B had largely taken hold of the jamaican popular music scene. In
the 1960s, all of these various influences came together to create a unique jamaican
musical style called ska.
The quick tempo of ska was a reflection of the upbeat mood in jamaica after gaining
independence in 1962. jamaicans soon observed, however, that serious social problems
remained, and in 1966, the music changed with the mood. A new style called rocksteady
emerged, replacing the upbeat pace of ska with a much slower feel. A short-lived
movement, rocksteady was only around for two years when jamaica's most famous
musical style, reggae, was born. From the late 1960s to the mid-1980s, reggae became
a worldwide sensation. During this time period, the Rastafari (those belonging to
the religious and cultural Rastafari movement covered on page 33) garnered a strong
association with reggae due to the international fame of Bob Marley and others. English
bands like The Clash and The Police started to incorporate reggae sounds into their own
music. By the latter half of the 20th century, a wide array of reggae subgenres developed,
including dancehall, toasting, dub, raggamuffin, reggaeton, 2-tone, and lovers rock, just to
name a few. Despite being a small island, jamaica and its varied musical traditions have
greatly inspired and influenced musicians and music lovers throughout the world.

CUBA GUITAR ATLAS Jeff Peretz CD TABLATURE SPARTITI LIBRO CHITARRA BOLERO MAMBO RITMI

CUBA, GUITAR ATLAS. SHEET MUSIC BOOK WITH CD & TABLATURE

LIBRO METODO DI MUSICA CUBANA, CON CD.

SPARTITI PER CHITARRA CON: ACCORDI, PENTAGRAMMA, TABLATURE.

Guitar Atlas: Cuba offers an in-depth look at the signature sound of Cuban music. At the heart of Cuban music lies the clave, the very definition of Cuban groove. Often mystifying to learn, Jeff Peretz breaks down the fundamental rhythm of the clave in Guitar Atlas: Cuba. Now any guitarist, even those who don’t play Cuban music, can learn the clave and improve their sense of rhythm and syncopation. The book also explores the African and European cultural influences that shaped modern Cuban music, as well as the political events of the 20th century. Learn about the different styles of music from all over the island, the musicians who popularized them, and many unique Cuban instruments including the tres, botija, marimbula, and other percussion instruments. Plus, the included CD demonstrates all the examples and compositions featured in the book.

In 1940, after overthrowing the progressive government of Ramon Grau San Martin, Colonel Fulgencio Batista was elected to a four-year term as President of Cuba. In 1952, he overthrew the democratic government of Carlos Prio Socarras to once again assume leadership. During his time in power, Batista courted investors and tourists from the United States. While this led to many mafia acquisitions of hotels, casinos, and mansions in and around Havana, it also led to an era of nightlife unlike any before. Despite the growing corruption of the Batista regime, music, dancing, and singing flourished in Havana in the 1950s. It was during this time that the music of Cuba became a major artistic force and established itself as a source of pride and identity for this island in the Caribbean. The 1950s are considered to be the golden era of Cuban music and nightlife. The instability of the government didn't end with Batista. On December 31, 1958, Batista was ousted by Fidel Castro and his barbudos (bearded guerillas), including the revolutionary legend Ernesto "Che" Guevara. Despite the violence and fear that gripped the nation during these transitional times, the music and nightlife continued to attract people from all over the world. Legendary night spots like the Casino de la Playa and the Tropicana offered musical revues starring such celebrated performers as Celia Cruz (the "Godmother of Salsa"), Arsenio Rodriguez, Xiomara Alfaro, and the Valdes Brothers. The excitement of the scene was not limited to the big night clubs and casinos. Small cafes such as El Paris and La Bombilla hosted local jam sessions known as descargas (which literally means "discharges"). These impromptu sessions attracted record companies from all over the world and are considered by many to be the precursor to the style of music that would later be known as salsa in New York. Some of these sessions were immortalized on classic recordings led by Israel "Cachao" Lopez. Aside from the night clubs, casinos, and cafe jams, radio was an important factor in the rise of Cuban music. It helped launch and sustain the careers of many titanic figures such as Arsenio Rodriguez, Isolina Carrillo, Orquesta Sensacion, and Compay Segundo, who would later gain international stardom as the face of the Buena Vista Social Club.

INTRODUCTION
This book assumes that you are an intermediate guitarist with the ability to read guitar tablature and/or standard music notation. You should have a good grasp of basic music theory, including scales and chords. You should also have some experience using scales to improvise, although the style you prefer to play is not important.
With this book, you'll be learning to create new sounds that will stretch your imagination, and the imaginations of your listeners.
About the Written Music in This Book The written examples printed in this book are doorways into the performance of this music. The key that unlocks them, however, is the CD. The musics of the Middle East are aural traditions, and capturing them in writing is only partially possible. While the written music examples are not literal transcriptions of the performances on the CD, they will serve as maps to what you are hearing.

HISTORY
Music has been on the planet longer than humans have been recording them history.
Archeologists have discovered musical instruments dating back almost 30,000 years; many
believe that music may even predate human speech. Ancient Mesopotamia (modern day
Iraq) is believed to be where it all started.
The Middle East is the birthplace of many things in this world, from civilization and
religions to paper, our alphabet and recorded history (not to mention calendars and
time keeping). It should come as no surprise that the Middle East is also a birthplace of
improvised music. The music of the region that we call the Middle East is a tradition
that has been cultivated for thousands of years. It is mentioned in the Bible and has been
academically documented since the late 6th century. Many styles which are still played
today date back as far as the Sassanid Dynasty (Persia, 224-651 A.D.), the Byzantine
Empire (4th-5th century) and earlier. The concept of using a stringed instrument as a
vehicle for melodic improvisation comes from these ancient stYles.
To truly understand how the music of the region evolved, we must paint a picture of
what life was like during pre-Islamic Arabia. The era that predated Mohammed and the
birth of Islam was a time of tribal unions, trade routes and gypsies. From North Africa
through the Eastern Mediterranean coast up to the Caspian and Aegean seas, and as
far east as the Zagros mountains and the Iranian Highlands, life was defined by tribal
association. Its story was told through the sung poetry known as Laya/i. The sung poetry
was often accompanied by an ud (also spelled oud) or other string instruments that were
light and portable and could be carried easily in a trade caravan.
There were three ways in which people lived in the early days of the Middle East. One
either lived in an urban center such as Baghdad or Damascus, a rural region as a farmer
or a shepherd, or you were a nomad (Bedouin/Gypsy) and traveled the land according
to the seasons and trade. While each way of life had its own unique contribution to the
musical development of the region, the concept of using a group of notes (scale) as a basis
for free expression (solo) is a common theme in the ancient music of the Middle East.
The ud, along with the tanbar, saz, bazooki, tar and setar, all precursors to the guitar, are
the key instruments in the development of melodic plucked string improvisation. The
approach to playing these instruments is the genesis of the way we play the guitar today.
In other words, this is where the pre-historic Hendrixs and Wes Montgomerys came
from. It is the birthplace of the guitar solo.

music from places like Darjeeling, Assam, Bengal,and Rajasthan;

Mahatma Gandhi's favorite songs.

You'll be introduced to Hindustani music, the classicalmusic

of North India, and learn how ragas are structured. A true

improvisor's art form, the subtlety and grace of Indian music

will infuse your playing- whether you play jazz, rock, blues or

any other style -with a new, unique flavor. Discover why some

of the greatest guitarists of our time have been drawn to this

unusual music. This thorough yet concise introduction will make

it fun and easy to get started playing music influenced by the

rich musical traditions of India.

The CD demonstrates all the examples and compositions featured in the book.

The lines between East and West are increasingly crossed and occasionally obliterated.

In this spirit, we will explore the modalities of the East on an instrument generally

thought of as Western. Not that it matters; music is an international language-like

mathematics, but with much more heart.

Before we can appreciate the emotional component of any style of music, we must learn

the rational aspects. This is the point of this book. It is a point of departure from which

you can take this music and give it life and meaning through your performance.

The musical examples presented in this book are arrangements. It assumes you:

- Read standard music notation and/or tablature.

- Have the ability to fingerpick simple arpeggios and chord/melody.

- Have a basic knowledge of music theory (scales and intervals).

This book is divided into three parts, each of which focuses on a different aspect of

Indian music: folk, devotional and classical. The first two parts, concerning folk and

devotional music, focus on songs with chordal accompaniment or repeating bass lines

and do not require extensive knowledge of the Indian system of music. The guitar is

very popular as an accompanying instrument in many forms of music in India.

The third part deals with the raga system of classical music-the "art music" of India.

To learn raga thoroughly, one must find a teacher. The nuances of this music cannot be

written down. Thus, the purpose of the raga chapter in this book is not to enable one

to perform a raga in the traditional sense, but to provide an insight into various modes

and their usage in a non-Western context. You can then use them as new colors in your

improvisation. Some Indian theory and historical background is provided, as well, to

help you understand some Eastern musical concepts. This chapter can only serve as an

introduction to this large body of music.

These three broad divisions of the book are almost independent of each other. Use them

in any order you like. The first two parts are more suited to a fingerstyle technique, the

third part can also be played with a pick.

A CD provides performances of all the examples in the book. The songs are played as

notated to help you get a feel for the sound and style. The performances of the ragas

on the CD will be very close to what is written in the book, but may not be exact. The

notation is just a skeleton, in keeping with the spirit of the music. Also, keep in mind

that real performances of ragas are quite extended, and these brief examples are just little

windows into the style. The CD also provides drones and backing percussion tracks for

the reader to improvise over. Feel free to try your own ideas!

Born in India and residing in the United States, guitarist-composer Sanjay Mishra

plays with an eclecticism well suited to his multicultural background. After completing

his studies at The Peabody Conservatory of Music, he began composing music

that combined Eastern and Western influences. In an interview with The Washington

Post, he explains "I come from a tradition that has a lot of improvisation. Sometimes

Western classical music can seem a little rigid, I had to find some middle ground."

Sanjay came to public acclaim with his highly-praised recording "Blue Incantation"

with Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia. His music has been released on Ryko,

PolyGram-Philips, Melodia (France), Putumayo World and others, as well as his own label, Akar.

The author's travels and experiences with guitarists throughout
Africa lend this book unmistakable authenticity, and the

every player. This thorough yet concise introduction makes it
fun and easy to explore the fascinating styles of a continent
rich in musical traditions.
Guitar Atlas: Africa

Guitar Styles From Around the Globe
20450

African guitar is a big subject, as big as the continent itself. Africa is 54 countries and
many hundreds of distinct ethnic groups, and while most people think of African music
as principally drumming and singing, there is an astounding number of guitar styles
unique to particular African settings. Paul Simon's breakthrough 1986 album
"Graceland" focused international attention on South African pop music and initiated
a process of discovery for cutious music fans around the world. What they found was
the dazzling array of music styles we now call Afropop. From the tangled guitar boogie
of the Congo-soukous music-to the serene percussive weave ofNigerianjuju music,
to the flashy fingerpickers of Mali and Madagascar, Africa's treasure chest of beautiful
and originaI contemporary guitar idioms seems inexhaustible.
Many of these idioms deserve a book of their own. Some are extensions of ancient
musical traditions that used indigenous instruments for centuries before the first
guitars carne to Africa with Portuguese sailors in the 16th century. These "roots"
genres sometimes have rich, widely inrerpreted repertoires and diverse, demanding
techniques specifically developed to render the sounds of African instruments on
guitar. Even brazenly modern guitar styles, like those in the Congo, have achieved
a remarkable level of depth and rigor within a few short decades of developmenr.
For all the travel and study l've put in, l've only scratched the surface of Africa's
guitar wealth. But l've learned enough to convey a number of important principI es
of some key African guitar styles.
That is the limited objective of Guitar Atlas: Africa. The African guitar styles introduced
here are by no means the only ones worthy of study. They are simply the ones I have been
fortunate enough to discover, and the ones l've become intrigued enough to tackle as a
player. This book would not have been possible without the openness and generosity of
the many guitarists who have shared their wisdom with me. Using the principles and
fundamentals in this book as a starting point, players will be able to approach recordings
of African music with greater appreciation and understanding. Still, mere is no substitute
for sitting down with those who grew up playing these styles, especially ifyou can do so in
Africa. My fondest hope for this book is that it will inspire other players to dig dee per into
this underexamined world of guitar music. I hope others will make their own journeys,
write their own books and articles, and bring as yet undiscovered African guitar geniuses
to international attention.
Guitar Atlas: Africa assumes that you have some experience playing and reading standard
music notation and/or TAB, and that you have some experience with both
fingerstyle and flatpick playing. It also assumes that you have some understanding of
basic music theory-time signatures, rhythms and note values (ranging from whole
notes to sixteenth notes), intervals, harmony (chords and chord symbols), and so on.

Banning Eyre has played guitar professionally since me mid1970s,
working in genres as diverse as jazz, flamenco, dancerock,
and reggae. Since 1990, he has specialized in guitar
styles from Mrica, making six trips to the continent to research
guitar music. Over the years, Banning has played in a
series of Congolese soukous bands in Boston, in the West Mrican
folk ensemble Cora Connection, and with a variety of
musicians performing Zimbabwean mbira music. He teaches
Mrican guitar styles, both privately and in workshops at Tribal
Soundz in New York City.
During travels in Mrica, Banning has performed with the Super Rail Band of Bamako
and Sali Sidibe in Mali, and with Thomas Mapfumo and the Blacks Unlimited in
Zimbabwe. He plays on two Thomas Mapfumo albums, "Chimurenga '98" and
"Chimurenga Explosion," and on a track from Taj Mahal and Toumani Diabate's
"Kulanjan" (Hannibal, 1999), voted the Folk Roots Album of the Year in the UK.
