Bluegrass Practice Session
This booklet was designed to help those who want to work with the Bluegrass Practice Session, but either do not know the melody line of the tunes on the CD, or need a written structure to follow during practice. In notating the tunes, we used standard music rather than tablature to enable players on a variety of instruments to learn the melodies. It should be mentioned that the tunes as written represent a very basic outline of what they sound like, and are not meant to be played literally. Remember that each of these tunes can be played in a variety of styles, both regional and personal, and is rarely played exactly the same way twice. So use these basic melodies to help you get an idea of how the piece goes, and then take it from there. Most of the tunes played on this CD are taught on one or more Homespun lessons, accompanied by tablature written for a specific instrument. For instance, IIB'ile Them Cabbage Down" is taught in detail by Kenny Kosek (fiddle), Sam Bush (mandolin) and Bill Keith (banjo). Bill, Sam, and Stacy Phillips (Dobro) all teach "Blackberry Blossom," and so on. If you feel at a loss to play along with this CD, even with the aid of this booklet, we suggest that you get some instructional material on your favorite instrument and really get down to it. The purpose of these back-ups is to give you a good solid band with which to practice your solos, licks, and improvisations. I know that this CD will provide you with many hours of pleasurable practice, and will get you ready for getting out and playing with others. Have fun with it!
