PREFAZIONE
Perché occuparsi del" passato della chitarra se il nostro interesse
è rivolto al suo futuro? Perché dal nostro punto di vista
non possiamo capire in quale direzione si sta sviluppando. Lo
studio della sua storia ci può rivelare il percorso che ha portato
alla chitarra contemporanea. Possiamo anche capire se l'uso che
facciamo dello strumento rientra realmente nella sua tradizione,
oppure se lo stiamo stravolgendo o adoperando in un modo
nuovo e diverso. Può la chitarra essere adoperata in un altro
modo senza che essa diventi qualcosa d'altro? È già avvenuto?
Se sì, perché e quante volte?
È molto difficile avere e conservare un atteggiamento imparziale
nei confronti della musica e degli strumenti musicali appartenenti
alla nostra civiltà; essi sono tanto antichi e tanto legati
a noi emotivamente. Non siamo i primi a confrontarci con
tale problema. Anche se in questo studio avremo a che fare in
primo luogo con una memoria ancora viva, con una storia molto
recente, molti problemi fanno parte di un passato più lontano.
Cercare nella storia situazioni simili a quelle che ora affronteremo,
sperando di scoprire dove esse hanno portato allora,
richiede l'abilità di capire con precisione la situazione attuale
e quella passata. L'indagine storica spesso non è stata obiettiva.
Troppe volte manca la giusta prospettiva e si può solo riflettere
sulla propria condizione culturale e storica. Il lungo rapporto
con molte delle persone e degli strumenti qui descritti ci ha permesso
di rilevare questi errori. Comunque, è stata una esperienza
veramente appagante, che desideriamo condividere con voi.

Introduzione
La chitarra attraversa oggi un periodo di rinascita. Diversi
segnali lo indicano. Consideriamo, per esempio, solo il grado
della sua popolarità; durante gli ultimi due secoli lo strumento
si è sviluppato e diffuso in tutto il mondo. In parte ciò è avvenuto
per la più generale diffusione della cultura occidentale
nell'epoca contemporanea; ma la chitarra ha anche mostrato
come essa, specialmente nelle aree di incrocio di culture diverse,
possa soddisfare esigenze musicali molteplici. L'incontro e la
sintesi di queste diverse culture ha prodotto, a volte, nuove forme.
Quando la chitarra, espressione di una data cultura, è stata introdotta
in un nuovo paese, subito è stata accettata e spesso anche
modificata. Si osservi, per esempio, l'America latina, con
Tangos, Guajiras, Barrios; o il nord America, col blues, il folk,
il rock; o anche l'Europa, col flamenco, la scuola di Tarrega,
l'accompagnamento del bouzouki greco e i canti degli zingari
russi. Nell'Estremo Oriente la chitarra non è ancora diventata
uno strumento popolare, ma essa è completamente penetrata
nella cultura giapponese ed è ben diffusa in quella coreana e
cinese.
Numerosi sono gli esempi del nuovo carattere internazionale
della chitarra 'spagnola', anche nel suo ambiente tradizionale.
La cantante spagnola Victoria de los Angeles è accompagnata
nei suoi concerti in tutto il mondo dal chitarrista giapponese
Ichiro Suzuki, residente in Spagna da molto tempo, e premiato
dai governi spagnolo e catalano per i suoi servizi nelle loro attività
culturali. Molti altri esempi vengono alla mente. Un chitarrista
tedesco, che usa una chitarra costruita da un ungherese
che vive in Canada, è stato invitato dal governo provinciale
dell'Andalusia per tenere un concerto a Siviglia. Un chitarrista
spagnolo, residente negli Stati Uniti e ben noto sia come membro
di un quartetto che come solista, ha ordinato una nuova
chitarra a un costruttore olandese che vive a Granada. Il costruttore
di chitarre spagnolo Romanillos ha studiato e lavora in Inghilterra.
Un importante duo chitarristico finlandese usa una
chitarra costruita da un inglese a Granada e un'altra da un olandese
a Torremolinos. Il chitarrista scozzese David Russell, ....

Scuole ed epoche

Williams e Segovia appartenevano a generazioni diverse,
e il più giovane chitarrista non sentì il bisogno di rinnovare
gli interessi di Segovia. Egli si concentrò sui concerti e
l'insegnamento. Il suo quasi coetaneo collega Julian Bream, invece,
scelse di impegnarsi nella nascita di una tradizione costruttiva
inglese. Bream fu molto aiutato in questo progetto dall'attività
di Arnold Dolmetsch, che tanto si adoperò per creare dei
costruttori di strumenti musicali e sostenere questa attività. Il
forte interesse di Bream nel liuto e nella musica antica lo fece
entrare in contatto con diversi costruttori (creando anche un
certo grado di interazione), fra cui Rubio e Romanillos, che ricevettero
molti benefici dall'assistenza di Bream. Molti buoni
costruttori si formarono da allora nel laboratorio di Rubio, in
particolare Paul Fischer.
Forse a causa della ben pubblicizzata associazione con Bream,
Romanillos è diventato rappresentativo, nel mondo, della moderna
liuteria inglese. Sebbene ciò non sia del tutto esatto, non
è però ingiusto. Romanillos e gli altri buoni costruttori inglesi
producono in genere strumenti sensibilmente diversi da quelli
dei loro colleghi spagnoli, giapponesi o tedeschi, ma non tanto
per differenze nello stile o nel modello, bensì per il concetto
di costruzione. I liutai inglesi, sensibili all'esperienza di rinascita
della 'musica antica', hanno tentato di conservare un rapporto
con la storia della chitarra nei loro principi di costruzione, ignorando
perciò, più o meno, il modello Ramirez. Le chitarre inglesi
degli anni Settanta e Ottanta costituiscono infatti per i chitarristi
una alternativa sia agli strumenti giapponesi sul modello
Kohno che a quelli spagnoli Ramirez. Esse sono in generale (semplificando
al massimo) ben fatte, non particolarmente potenti,
ma con un suono caldo e un buon equilibrio. Spesso riflettono
antichi principi costruttivi, più di quanto non facciano le chitarre
costruite nel dopoguerra a Madrid, Wiesbaden o Tokyo.
Romanillos deve essere infatti ricordato tanto per i suoi contributi
alle ricerche su Torres quanto per la sua propria produzione.
Il suo libro su Torres è stato pubblicato in un momento appropriato,
quando poteva suggerire agli altri costruttori una riflesione
sulla loro origine e confermare la moderna rinascita di
interesse, nella sua patria (Andalusia), per l'opera di Torres. È
alquanto strano, comunque, che Romanillos, svolgendo le sue
ricerche così vicino a Granada, non si sia accorto del ritorno ...

Amparo

Originally known as Ohla, Maria (Look, Mary), it was later used in the film The Adventurers. I created this

guitar arrangement based on a solo piano version by Jobim. Again, the exquisite result of a polyphonic

structure is successfully projected on the solo guitar. Like in many of Jobim's works, influences from

Chopin and Debussy are notable here.

Caminho de Pedra (Rocky Road)

Written in the 1950s,this song is in the style of "toada," echoing the peaceful and primitive quality of the

rural backlands. The introduction sets up that quality which is kept with a steady movement in the middle

voice throughout the piece.

In the second section, the beautiful harmonic changes portray nature's exuberance in those regions of the

country. The piece concludes with the theme played in harmonics, like a beautiful image getting distant and

disappearing from one's mind.

Canta Mais (Sing More)

Also from the late 1950s,this is a small masterpiece in which Jobim shows his affection and admiration for

the music of Villa-Lobos. The contrapuntal accompaniment style is somehow reminiscent of Villa-Lobos'

famous Bachianas Brasileiras NO.5. By its title, the extremely lyrical Canta Mais suggests the love of the

Brazilian people to always sing and sing more.

Corcovado (Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars)

When the "bossa nova" exploded into world-wide popularity in the early 1960s, Corcovado became a

favorite, inspired by the magnificent view of Christ's statue on top of the Corcovado mountain in Rio de

Janeiro.

The introduction creates an intimate feeling which leads into the main theme. In this solo arrangement, a

balanced polyphonic texture with frequent contrapuntal movement produces an orchestral flavor. The

song ends with delicate harmonics enhancing its sensuality and intimacy.

Desafinado (Off-key)

One ofJobim' s most famous songs, Desafinado was composed in the late 1950s.Along with Chega de Saudade

it launched the "bossa-nova" movement in Brazil in 1958with the recordings of Joao Gilberto singing and

accompanying himself on guitar.

In this solo arrangement, the theme is presented with a delicate flavor using harmonics followed by an

introduction arranged by the composer from an earlier orchestral version-then going into the main

section with the bass line keeping a strong rhythmic pulse and the melody swinging with a samba

inflection. Counterlines are constantly weaving and the polyrhythmic texture becomes intense at the climax with an

illusion of more instruments participating in "tutti," including an occasional use of silence with the rhythm

being obvious.
