JOBIM ANTONIO CARLOS, 9 PIECES. Carlos Barbosa Lima. SHEET MUSIC BOOK FOR GUITAR WITH TABLATURE.

LIBRO DI MUSICA BOSSA NOVA.

SPARTITI PER CHITARRA :

PENTAGRAMMA E TABLATURE.

Nine Pieces. (Solo Guitar). By Antonio Carlos Jobim. For solo guitar (no lyrics).

Latin and Jazz.

Difficulty: medium.

Guitar tablature songbook.

Guitar tablature, standard notation, guitar notation legend and performance notes.

80 pages. Music Sales

With guitar tablature, standard notation, guitar notation legend and performance notes. Latin and Jazz. 9x12 inches.

"Corcovado," "Stone Flower," "One Note Samba," plus six more Jobim masterworks, arranged for solo guitar with music notation and guitar tablature.

Amparo

Originally known as Ohla, Maria (Look, Mary), it was later used in the film The Adventurers. I created this

guitar arrangement based on a solo piano version by Jobim. Again, the exquisite result of a polyphonic

structure is successfully projected on the solo guitar. Like in many of Jobim's works, influences from

Chopin and Debussy are notable here.

Caminho de Pedra (Rocky Road)

Written in the 1950s,this song is in the style of "toada," echoing the peaceful and primitive quality of the

rural backlands. The introduction sets up that quality which is kept with a steady movement in the middle

voice throughout the piece.

In the second section, the beautiful harmonic changes portray nature's exuberance in those regions of the

country. The piece concludes with the theme played in harmonics, like a beautiful image getting distant and

disappearing from one's mind.

Canta Mais (Sing More)

Also from the late 1950s,this is a small masterpiece in which Jobim shows his affection and admiration for

the music of Villa-Lobos. The contrapuntal accompaniment style is somehow reminiscent of Villa-Lobos'

famous Bachianas Brasileiras NO.5. By its title, the extremely lyrical Canta Mais suggests the love of the

Brazilian people to always sing and sing more.

Corcovado (Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars)

When the "bossa nova" exploded into world-wide popularity in the early 1960s, Corcovado became a

favorite, inspired by the magnificent view of Christ's statue on top of the Corcovado mountain in Rio de

Janeiro.

The introduction creates an intimate feeling which leads into the main theme. In this solo arrangement, a

balanced polyphonic texture with frequent contrapuntal movement produces an orchestral flavor. The

song ends with delicate harmonics enhancing its sensuality and intimacy.

Desafinado (Off-key)

One ofJobim' s most famous songs, Desafinado was composed in the late 1950s.Along with Chega de Saudade

it launched the "bossa-nova" movement in Brazil in 1958with the recordings of Joao Gilberto singing and

accompanying himself on guitar.

In this solo arrangement, the theme is presented with a delicate flavor using harmonics followed by an

introduction arranged by the composer from an earlier orchestral version-then going into the main

section with the bass line keeping a strong rhythmic pulse and the melody swinging with a samba

inflection. Counterlines are constantly weaving and the polyrhythmic texture becomes intense at the climax with an

illusion of more instruments participating in "tutti," including an occasional use of silence with the rhythm

being obvious.

This book is a guide to some of the techniques needed for "getting into latin jazz guitar." There are 5 independent sections: References and definition of terms; exercises and/or pieces which demonstrate various guitar techniques; examples of common Rasgueado patterns; the "Riverboat Suite," studies for developing rhythmic ability and appreciation; and pieces in a variety of different Latin styles. The CD, used in conjunction with the written notation, tablature and chord symbols, gives a clear idea of what is required for players and teachers of all levels. It is assumed that the reader is familiar with guitar and music notation, but glossaries of terms are included for reference. There are a variety of patterns which are employed in the different styles of music; the examples show how to "get into" some basic forms. All the techniques described are playable on the fingerstyle guitar, and the pieces themselves are selected and arranged with performance in mind.

Getting Into Latin Guitar

This book is a guide to some of the techniques needed for "Getting Into Latin Guitar".

There are 5 independent sections:

• References and definition of terms.

• Exercises and/or pieces which demonstrate various guitar techniques.

• Examples of common Rasgueado patterns.

• "Riverboat Suite" - studies for developing rhythmic ability and appreciation.

• Pieces in a variety of different Latin styles.

The CD, used in conjunction with the written notation and tablature, gives a clear idea of what is required for players and teachers of all levels.

It is assumed that the reader is familiar with guitar and music notation, but glossaries of terms are included for reference.

Rasgueados are special strumming techniques which allow the guitar to be used, simultaneously, as a percussive rhythm and harmony instrument. There are a variety of patterns which are employed in the different styles of music; the examples show how to "get into" some basic forms.

The "Riverboat Suite" in the rhythm section deals with permutations of rhythmic attacks without regard to idiom, and each piece within the suite is contains a specific number of attacks per measure. The studies reflect flavors from a riverboat journey made in the Amazon and consequently are not out of context in the book.

The idea behind the studies is to create an awareness of rhythm in the way that we are aware of pitch notes and chords, and being able to read and play them will focus attention on and give an understanding of the rhythmic patterns that are such a feature of Latin music. The studies lay a groundwork for "Getting Into ... " Latin styles.

The final section consists of original and traditional Latin music for study and/or performance.

The music is presented with mainstream, traditional music notation, tablature and chord symbols.

The audio CD tracks are cross-referenced in the text with CD.

All the techniques described are playable on the fingerstyle guitar, and the pieces themselves are selected and arranged with performance in mind.

The guitar is such an individual instrument, rich in its resources, that all its techniques cannot be covered in one volume.

I hope that the reader finds the contents of this book a useful way of "Getting Into Latin Guitar."

My thanks to Bill Bay and Doug for inspiring the project.

John Zaradin's professional life began performing with the violinist, Jan Resek, in Germany and the UK, after which his London debut concert, in 1968, at the Purcell Room, Royal Festival Hall, launched him into the London musical world. Here, he was exposed to a wide variety of music and was called upon to perform in studios, in theatre and on the concert platform. He made, at this time, with the London Symphony Orchestra, the guitar recordings for the television series The Strauss Family.

His London theatre life began at the Royal Court Theatre with Shakespeare's Twelfth Night (director Jane Howells), evolved onto the West End stage at the Piccadilly Theatre with Man of La Mancha and continued into touring with the musicals Hair and Fiddler on the Roof and with the companies Ballet Rambert, London Contemporary Dance and Glyndeboume Opera.

In 1972 Belwin Mills became his (John Zaradin's) first publisher and he made his first solo recording Concierto de Aranjuez by J. Rodrigo (EMI/CFP) which became a Gold Disc. (see An Appreciation of Joaquin Rodrigo by Robert Antecki, saying "my personal favorite is on an LP, with John Zaradin and Guy Barbier conducting the Philomusica of London"). Following a meeting with Peter Brook, in the same year, he was invited to join the Royal Shakespeare Company for the world tour of his production: Midsummer Night's Dream, after which he began to travel in the Latin Americas where and found a focus for his personal musical ideas.

Returning to Europe he recorded Zaradin's Guitar for EMI (1976) and formed "Images of Brasil", which played original compositions and a kaleidoscope of music from Brazil, made television & radio performances and performed in venues ranging from Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club to the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London.

In 1984, he became interested in the computer as a medium for preparing and storing music and this has become an essential tool for him as a composer, arranger and performer.

In 1988 Alby James, director of the Temba Theatre Company, invited him to compose and perform original music for the company's production of Romeo & Juliet, the setting of the play being transposed to Havana from Verona. The music eventually evolved into the Mel Bay publication Caribbean Fantasy for Acoustic Guitar.

The CCGP is an addition to an extensive catalogue of works for Music Sales.

His Latin Suite for Guitar & Orchestra is also a Mel Bay Publication.

THE BRAZILIAN SOUND FOR FINGERSTYLE GUITAR RICK UDLER TABLATURE DVD CHITARRA BRASILIANA

THE BRAZILIAN SOUND FOR FINGERSTYLE GUITAR, BY RICK UDLER. SHEET MUSIC BOOKLET WITH GUITAR TABLATURE & DVD

DVD DI MUSICA, LEZIONE PER CHITARRA CON SPARTITI E TABLATURE.

When Rick was 11, his family moved to São Paulo, Brazil, and soon after he took up the guitar. While still in his teens, he began performing professionally in São Paulo.

From 1981-1987, Rick lived in New Orleans, Los Angeles, and Miami, where he studied, performed, and built a reputation as a versatile player with a remarkable command of bossa nova.

Rick headed back to Brazil in 1987 to rub elbows with the players he admires so much, as well as to research Brazilian music straight from the source – he's been living there ever since. In 1990, he teamed up with vocalist extraordinaire Maria Alvim; the two continue to perform together to this day.

In 1993 and 1994, Rick was commissioned to compose for the award-winning Grupo de Dois dance company. In 1996, Rhythm and Romance, the highly anticipated debut CD of the Udler-Alvim duo, was released in the U.S. The CD includes Rick's compositions with famed Brazilian lyricists Paulo Cesar Pinheiro and J.C. Costa Netto and guest appearances by some of Brazil’s top musicians, including world-renown artists João Parahyba (percussion) and Bocato (trombone).

Publications such as JazzTimesJazzizJust Jazz GuitarAcoustic GuitarRhythm Music, and The Beat gave the recording outstanding reviews, and it was chosen “best debut album of the year” by the nationally syndicated radio program The Sounds of Brazil.

In 1999, Rick had the pleasure to produce legendary Brazilian guitarist Paulinho Nogueira’s first U.S. release, Reflections, which received superb reviews. For a complete change of pace and a bow to his childhood idol, Rick performed as George Harrison in a 2002 Beatles-revival theater production in São Paulo.

Rick’s first entirely instrumental CD, Papaya, was released in Brazil in 2006. The album was conceived as an homage to the acoustic guitar and recorded, mixed and co-produced by studio veteran Eduardo Gebara. Percussion ace João Parahyba once more adds his unmistakable touch along with the superb Zé Alexandre on acoustic bass and on one track, Lika Meinberg on piano. The Brazilian and international press have been unanimous in their praise.

In 2007 and 2008 Rick toured in Brazil and the United States, which included performances and Brazilian guitar workshops at the annual Chet Atkins Appreciation Society convention in Nashville,Tennessee, one of the major fingerstyle guitar events in the USA.

The Brazilian Sound for Fingerstyle Guitar, a DVD lesson taught by Rick and produced by Stefan Grossman's Guitar Workshop was released in January of 2009. During the lesson, Rick shares many of the essential techiniques that are unique to Brazilian guitar styles and which are appreciated around the world.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, arrangement: Rick Udler

AMIGO PAULO

Brazil has produced some of the most vibrant and exciting guitar music in the instrument's history. In this lesson, Rick Udler discusses and demonstrates styles, techniques, and rhythms of Brazil's great players. This is a unique opportunity for guitarists to delve into the beautiful sounds of this musical land.

Rick begins by going over chords that are commonly used by Brazilian guitarists. He then teaches the accompaniment to singer/songwriter Gilberto Gil's beautiful composition, "A Paz", to illustrate the use of chords with open strings. A step-by-step analysis of Bossa Nova accompaniment in the João Gilberto style follows along with suggestions on how to develop a better feel for this sophisticated, syncopated groove.

The solo guitar rendition of the Antonio Carlos Jobim/Newton Mendonça classic "One Note Samba" will be a welcome addition to many players repertoires with it's rhythmic drive and rich harmony.

Samba rhythms are then explored with examples that are sure to enhance one's groove and arsenal of techniques. Rick also gives examples of inner string movement which will prove invaluable to those looking for ways to generate more excitement and authenticity in their comping. A sambified version of "Happy Birthday" demonstrates how to apply these techniques to a familiar tune and make it sound fresh.

And, to provide an even greater challenge for all players, Rick gives a detailed analysis of his tour de force solo guitar piece "Amigo Paulo", composed as an homage to his friend, guitar legend Paulinho Nogueira (1927-2003). This tune with it's choro influences incorporates many of the techniques Rick learned directly from the master and is sure to provide much musical food for thought for players who are looking for innovative new colors and textures to add to their playing.

Buck Wolters belongs to the very small company of guitar players and composers who are familar with nearly every style. His authentic mix of jazz, world and latin music, combined with a mastery of classical guitar technique is very unique and outstanding. Born in 1961 in Dortmund, Germany, he began to play the guitar as an autodidact at the age of five. After hearing a recording of Big Bill Broonzy he took his first guitar lessons at the age of thirteen, digging into the blues for several years. At the age of sixteen he went to the conservatory in his hometown where he studied classical guitar. The music of Agustin Barrios, Heitor Villa-Lobos and David Qualey were his main influences. After leading the life of a busker in his twenties, he went to the School of Arts in Amsterdam to study jazz guitar and composition and spent most of his time then copying jazz solos from musicians like John Coltrane, Keith Jarrett, Pat Metheny and Wes Montgomery. He completed his studies as a bachelor with distinction. Today Buck Wolters is very busy performing, composing, recording and teaching throughout Europe. His greatest success belongs to his composition "Dshamilja" ordered in commission by the Opera of Frankfurt.

Since latin music is very popular today, many fingerstyle or classical guitar players want to add it to their repertoire. These five compositions are intended for those players. Because of the complexity of latin rhythms, special attention should be placed on the independence between the right-hand thumb (bass pattern) and the other right-hand fingers (chord pattern or melody lines). So most of the focus is put on right-hand coordination, while left hand difficulties like stretches or use of the barre are minimized in the compositions. The introduction of each composition (first 4 to 16 bars of each piece) represents the typical rhythmic motion of the certain styles, which are characterized by three elements: 1. The clave (Spanish "key" or "code"), a rhythmic pattern of two bars, which must be kept up throughout the entire piece. Since the clave can be referred to rythmically as the "heart" of each latin style, it is mostly played on good, audible, high-pitched percussion instruments (e.g. woodsticks). Many styles can be recognized by an additional typical percussion pattern (e.g. Bolero and Merengue).

2. The bass pattern.

3. The piano or rhythm guitar pattern.

Practical advice on learning the pieces:

1. Listen to the cd several times.

2. Try to clap the clave of each piece along with the cd. (See the condensed rhythmic pictures on the following pages!)

3. Once you have the clave down try to add your feet tapping on beats "one" and "three".

4. Hit the rhythm of the bass pattern on your body. Once you have it down try to add your feet on "one" and "three".

5. Try the same with the piano/rhythm guitar pattern.

6. Learn the intro of each piece by heart before you start working through the entire piece. This guarantees your ability to keep up the rhythmic feeling of the piece while working through it.

7. Dance to the music and have fun.
