Tango for Guitar
Series: Guitar
Publisher: Centerstream Publications
Format: Softcover with CD
Author: Brian Chambouleyron
Composer: Jorge Polanuer

At the beginning of the 20th Century, the tango was born in Buenos Aires, and it was a style that spread dramatically all over the world. Tango is a dance, a rhythm and a characteristic musical color. The 13 solos in this book were written especially for guitar by award-winning composers Jorge Polanuer and Brian Chambouleyron, and each tune is performed on the CD by Brian, one of the most popular guitarists in Buenos Aires. The solos are presented in different degrees of complexity – tune up with the tuning notes on the CD and play along with the tangos, milangos, waltzes and even a guitar duet. The songs are also repeated on the CD without the lead for you to play the solo part.

The guitar is a charasteristic musical instrument in Argentine culture. Since the arrival of Spaniards to South America, it has had a key role in our folk music. Its sound has been the composers and interpreters' favorite. At present there is a broad and comprehensive catalog of songs and instrumental pieces, which encompasses early genres of the 19th century as well as the latest pop creations. At the beginning of the 20th century (around the time of the blues), the tango was born in Buenos Aires: a style arising from immigration and the melting pot which was going to spread dramatically all over the world. Tango is a dance, a rhythm and a charasteristic musical color. It is in tango where the guitar reaches a remarkable level of technical and expressive development. Today I propose an approach in the 'tanguero' style of playing the guitar, with some pieces specially composed by Jorge Polanuer, a composer and a friend, and myself. The tangos in this book are accompained by valses-tango and milonga-tango, similar and complementary genres also played in ballrooms. For each piece I suggest fingering based on the criterion of economy of movements. The numbers on the notes indicate the finger with which that note must be played, and the encircled number refers to the string. There can be other ways of fingering which might be more practical for you; that being the case, feel free to modify it accordingly. There's a way to play for every instrumentalist! The pieces present different degrees of complexity; therefore, they could also make an excellent complement in learning how to play the instrument. I hope you find this approach useful and you feel like filling yourselves with tango.

Brian Chambouleyron became a musician studying several disciplines (guitar, singing, composition, musical analysis, arrangements and orchestration). Always fascinated with popular music, he traveled to different Latin American countries to learn their traditions. He began his professional activity as a music teacher in 1990.Teaching led to the creation of children's shows. As a composer of popular songs, he participated in the Buenos Aires' Young Artists biennial exhibition. In 1993he went on his first professional tour to Europe, going all over France and Switzerland for two months and performing as both soloist and together with other musical bands. He also gave courses on Argentine popular music. From then on, his activities in European countries became regular. In 1996 he was in charge of the musical direction of the successful show Recuerdos son recuerdos (which received 5 ACE awards nominations). Brian Chambouleyron was nominated for 'male revelation'. (CD Recuerdos son recuerdos - La Trastienda Records). In 1998 he participated in the show Glorias Portenas (1998ACE award) together with Soledad Villamil, which was given an excellent reception by the critics and the public. The show toured continuously throughout Argentina, Latin America and Europe for two years, and participated in prestigious international festivals (CD Glorias Portenas vol. I and II - Epsa Music). Brian Chambouleyron was given the 1999Trinidad Guevara award for 'male revelation of the year' by the Department of Culture of Buenos Aires City. In 2000 he created the show Patio de Tango with Esteban Morgado, which also had a wonderful reception at a national level, and he started a long international tour (Paris, Rome, Madrid, Barcelona, etc). (CD Patio de Tango - BAM records, Department of Culture). With his last show, Tangos, valses and Milongas, he has performed in several cultural events and toured abroad, being highly acclaimed by audiences and critics. Brian has also composed the music for several theatre plays: "La firecilla domada" , 2004; "Pequena historia del tango", 2002; "Granadina", 2003; ect. In 2004 recorded the CD "Chambouleyron sings GardeI", a selection of the finest compositions by Gardel, arranged by B. Ch. (Random records, Buenos Aires). In 2005 recorded the CD "Voiceand Guitar", Twenty tradicional tango and argentinian popular music pieces, arranged by Chambouleyron. (Random records, Buenos Aires) on Ie canta a Gardel (Chambouleyron sings Gardel). This work is a selection of the finest compositions by Gardel-plus a few jewels from his songbook - recreated in an intimate and romantic atmosphere.

Performed by Christian Reichert, guitar
Accompaniment : Katarzyna Bury, flute; Jochen Hank, percussion

Here is a collection of Latin masterpieces, arranged for flute, guitar and percussion. From the fabled Granada and François Borne’s rousing Fantasy on Themes from Bizet’s Carmen, to Brasilian superstar Celso Machado’s magnificent Suite Popular Brasileira and Astor Piazzolla’s Libertango, there is a wealth of thrilling music for every flutist. Listen to virtuosi Katarzyna Bury and Christian Reichert perform these classic pieces in a complete reference recording. Then you take Mr. Richert’s place alongside Mr. Reichert and the percussionist for a Latin music-fest that you will never forget! Bravo!

Includes a newly engraved, authoritative printed solo part, and a compact disc containing a complete version with soloist, in digitally recorded stereo; then a digital stereo version of the accompaniment, minus the soloist.

Polish born flute virtuoso Katarzyna Bury has garnered acclaim wherever she performs. She studied at the music academies in Katowice and also in Freiburg (Germany) with Prof. Robert Aitken (Canada). She participated in many master classes with such world-famous artists as James Galway, Michel Debost, Eberhardt Grünenthal and others. While studying in Poland she had already become flutist with the Silesian Philharmonic Orchestra and was playing numerous concerts as a soloist in Poland and Germany. At nineteen years of age she was a prize-winner at the international flute competition in Krakow. She continued her studies in Germany, where she garnered further prizes at the international music competition Pacem in terris in Bayreuth.

In 1999 Ms. Bury took the First Prize at the International Competition for Flute in Frankfurt.

Together with guitarist Christian Reichert she won international chamber music prizes in Cologne and Frankfurt. She concertized extensively with Christian Reichert all over Europe. In addition to her broad repertory, her interest in contemporary music is evident in her many performances of debut works. She has made numerous recordings for compact disc, radio and television and has performed many concerts as soloist and chamber-musician all over Europe.

Christian Reichert shows a command of the guitar that encompasses both extreme sensitivity and virtuosity. The guitarist with “the fascinating technical experience and perfect rhythm” (SZ Germany) “fills the audience easily with enthusiasm” (El País, Spain). He concertizes and gives master-classes frequently all over Europe including Russia and Bulgaria, in the U.S. and other inernational venues. (Paris, Moscow, Granada, Montreux, Stockholm, Cracow, Sofia, Vienna etc.) Christian Reichert works as a soloist with renowned orchestras like the „Rousse Philharmonic Ochestra“, the “Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra”, the „Plovdiv Philharmonic Orchestra, the “Freiburg Philharmonic Orchestra”, the „Orchestra Cameralna Bratislava“, “Deutsche Kammersolisten” and many others.Mr. Reichert earned worldwide reputation with his much lauded and constantly broadening compact disc recordings for “Music Minus One” in New York. He has recorded the most important guitar concertos with orchestra like Rodrigos´ “Concierto de Aranjuez”, “Fantasia para un Gentilhombre”, concertos by Mauro Giuliani, Ferdinando Carulli, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Manuel Maria Ponce and Antonio Vivaldi. The recordings are distributed worldwide and almost 25.000 copies being sold in 18 countries.By age 21 he was a prize-winner at the Andrés Segovia International Guitar Competition in Spain. He won several prizes at international competitions all over Europe like 1998 the First Prize at the International Guitar Foundation`s Competition in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, as well as First Prize at the International Competition for Contemporary Music 1999 in Frankfurt (Germany). He finished his studies as a guitar soloist in Cologne and Freiburg with distinction. His teachers were Roberto Aussel (Argentina), Sonja Prunnbauer, Manuel Barrueco, Leo Brouwer, Roland Dyens and the Grammy winners Alvaro Pierri and Sharon Isbin. Christian Reichert has recorded more than 20 CDs and played for many television and radio stations in Germany and abroad.

SUGGESTIONS FOR USING THIS MMO EDITION
We have tried to create a product that will provide you an easy way to learn and perform these duets with a full accompaniment in the comfort of your own home. The following MMO features and techniques will reduce these inflexibilities and help you maximize the effectiveness of the MMO practice and performance system: Where the soloist begins a piece or movement solo, we have provided subtle introductory taps, inserted at the actual tempo, before the soloist's entrance. Because it involves a fixed performance, there is an inherent lack of flexibility in tempo. We have observed generally accepted tempi, but some may wish to perform at a different tempo, or to slow down or speed up the accompaniment for practice purposes. You can purchase from MMO specialized CD players & recorders that allow variable speed while maintaining proper pitch. This is an indispensable tool for the serious musician and you may wish to look into purchasing this useful piece of equipment for full enjoyment of all your MMO editions. We want to provide you with the most useful practice and performance accompaniments possible.

Performance Notes for Libertango and Granada The tambora technique on the beginning of Piazzolla 's famous Libertango is very common to us guitarists. Hit the strings with the thumb very close beside the bridge. If you want to improve this and bring out the upper line (here the high e-string) clearly, turn the right hand as much to the left until you hit the e-string with the nail part of the thumb. This will immediately give the upper line a proper accent and you can create a nice melody over the chords. I use some rasgueados in Granada that are not very usual for a classical guitarist, but more flamenco-like. In bars 1-5, 17-21 and also 100-101, I play for every quarter-note eight sixty-fourth-notes. Here is the technique I use for these places: imagine that four sixty-fourth-notes are like one circle. I always start the circle with the thumb moving up (which means from the high strings to the low strings). The reason I start with the thumb is that it is the strongest finger, and so has to be the first of these four notes. The following three notes I do with the "a," "m" and "i" fingers in this order moving down (meaning from the low strings to the high strings). This should be practiced very slowly at the beginning and a Iways having in mind that the right hand is not too tensioned and the moves are not too big. Only then can one make it to a proper speed. BOSSA NOVA GUITAR, Essential Chord Progressions, Patterns, Rhythms and Techniques, Carlos Arana. CD TABLATURE

Series: Guitar Educational
Medium: Softcover with CD
Author: Carlos Arana

Bossa Nova Guitar is intended for a wide range of guitarists, from those with little experience in complex musical styles like jazz, Samba, or Bolero, to highly trained professional guitarists looking to expand their musical palettes. From Joao Gilberto to Antonio Carlos Jobim, the Bossa Nova guitar style has become firmly entrenched in the jazz culture. In this book, you'll gain a strong command of the style, concentrating on these core elements: harmony, rhythms, right-hand technique, chord progressions, essential patterns, and more. Includes a CD.

INTRODUCTION

Bossa nova, an internationally popular style of Brazilian music, was originally developed in Rio de Janeiro, in the late fifties. Precise definition of its origins is uncertain given that there were a number of contributing factors and influences, many of which took place simultaneously and all of which can be considered legitimate precursors. Most musical historians agree, however, that the official "birth" of bossa nova occurred with the 1958 release of Elizeth Cardoso's Can980 de Amor Demais, on which a young guitarist named Joao Gilberto played a song called "Chega de Saudade" written by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moreas. The second defining moment, and the one that truly established the classic sound of bossa nova guitar, was the release of Gilberto's first album as a solo artist, also titled Chega de Saudade, later that same year. It was on this album that Gilberto beautifully demonstrated for the first time all of the principal rhythmic, harmonic, and melodic characteristics that have come to define bossa nova.

Gilberto's work on that record, as well as on his two subsequent albums, was musical genesi. It influenced not only the entire bossa nova movement but also subsequent generations of Brazilian pop musicians. It also established a strong connection with American jazz musicians, many who began to include elements of bossa nova in their own compositions and repertoires. This, in turn, led to a number of albums that had an unprecedented impact around the world. Many of these recordings are still popular today, including such classics as Antonio Carlos Jobim's Garota de Ipanema (Girl from Ipanema), the title track of which is arguably the most popular bossa nova song ever written. Bossa Nova Guitar is intended for a wide range of guitarists, from those with little experience in complex musical styles like jazz, Samba, or Bolero to highly trained professional guitarists looking to expand their musical palettes. To meet the needs of such diverse groups, the first chapter provides a background in bossa nova-related theory so that the reader can better understand the basic concepts that will then be applied in the examples and exercises found in the later chapters.

Brazil is one of the musical melting-pots of the world. The mixture of African and the native Indian culture,
a highly developed European classical tradition, joyful Caribbean and melancholic Latin American mood, the
expressive freedom and complex harmony of jazz characterizing altogether the music of this extraordinary country.
Within the limited space of this book I just have chosen five styles from this extensive range of music. I hope
you will enjoy these five Brazilian compositions of mine. The styles that they represent are explained briefly in

the following. Buck Wolters

Caminho do coracao (Afoxe)
Also known as Ljexa, Afoxe is originally a dance and singing style performed at religious processions in honor
of Oxum (goddess of love), sung in Yoruba, a language of African origin. Afoxe is also a word for a special shaker
(Xequere).

Copacabenny (Samba)
Originally Samba was a collective name for many dance-styles that where brought to Brazil by African slaves.
The word Samba comes from "Semba" which means "belly-dance". Because the slaves got their feet and hands
tied they could only dance with their bellies. Also The Maxixe (known as "Brazilian Tango") which was the first
original Brazilian urban dance in the late 19th century contributed to the development of Samba.
Copacabenny is dedicated to my dear friend and drummer Benny Mokross.

Jobinho (Bossa Nova)
Bossa Nova (translated: "New Wave") had it beginnings in the late 1950th and can be seen as a mixture of
Samba and Cool Jazz. One can say, that Bossa Nova is a "cooled down" Samba, played with a smoother and softer
attitude. Samba and Bossa Nova share the same rhythmic basic-pattern, the Samba- or Bossa-Nova-Clave:

Jobinho is dedicated to Antonio Carlos Jobim (1927-1994), who made Bossa Nova popular all over the
world.

Giro do gaviao (Partido Alto)
Partido Alto is a style with stronger pop- and jazz influences. It is mostly played in the big cities of eastern
Brazil, normally performed by electric bands. Of all styles that are presented here it is the most modem. Partido
Alto is also based on the clave mentioned above.

Papagaio apaixonado (Choro)
Choro came into being from a mixture of Habanera, Polka, and African dance styles in the 2nd half of the
19th century. It is mainly instrumental music, which demands much virtuosity from the players, because it is to be
played in a constant rush of eighths, or sixteenths. Like in Jazz, the players improvise on the form, and harmonic
structure of the Choro. Often they improvise collectively as in a competition. Probably the word Choro comes
from "chorar" which means "crying" or from the African dance Xolo.
Papagaio apaixonado is dedicated to my dear friend Carlo Marchione, one of the world greatest classical guitarists.
