INTRODUCTION

What clues?" you may ask. Well, my friends, instead of just bombarding you with a deluge of theory and a myriad of scales, both of which usually numb the average soul into a state of selfdeprecating perplexity (often exemplified by a vacuous expression and a dab of drool around the corners of the mouth), I will "clue" you in to a bevy of tasty morsels which you can immediately apply to lead and/or rhythm playing, which will inspire you to play better guitar. What a concept! By taking one of the most basic improvisatory tools, the pentatonic scale, and employing all the powers of minutia, you shall accumulate a host of ideas and nuances that, demonstrated in sample improvisations over guitar rhythm tracks which are also transcribed, will have you playing more inspired lead and rhythm guitar from the first few pages. Whether you are somewhat new to improvising or have been doing it for a while, you will harvest golden info-nuggets that you can put to use right away, from volume swells to chicken-pickin' to intervallic and chordal ideas. All of these things are shown in a universally-applicable bluesy environment that gradually adds cool skills to basic concepts, which not only makes it easy to use effectively right away but also makes it easy to explain to others, if you are so inclined. A host of other facts and tidbits are thrown in to clue you in on everything from keeping your guitar in tune to jam etiquette inspired by the onslaught of questions received by the author at clinics, at gigs, and on the internet. This is not a beginner's book, nor is it a grand thesis on improvisatory complexity, but folks on both ends of the spectrum can learn something from it!

BLUES JAM ETIQUETTE

Playing
with other live human beings is the best way to get your timing together, to learn to develop solos, to get an understanding of dynamics, to get a tone happening, and so on. If getting your own band together to either rehearse and/or perform is not practical at the moment, going to a blues jam at a local club is not a bad idea. It is important, however, to be familiar with some of the rules of engagement to avoid an unpleasant experience (although some are seemingly unavoidable, but do not let that deter you!). First of all, make certain that it is an "open jam" before bringing in your guitar and stating a desire to sit in. Going into a club, no matter how unassuming it may seem, and asking to sit in with a random band on a random night is a recipe for disaster. It may be no big deal, or it may be like asking some stranger to let you dance with his wife. Why chance it? Once the jam has been sussed, be apprised that the band leader hosting the jam can range from 1) a benevolent soul who enjoys playing with other musicians so much that he has decided to provide an opportunity to jam with friends and to nurture fledgling instrumentalists on an off night for a nominal fee to 2) a bitter bar-band grifter who wants to enjoy another evening of free drinks and the opportunity to humiliate lesser-qualified musicians over endless renditions of tunes like "Sweet Home Chicago" and "Mustang Sally." Sometimes these two descriptions can apply to the same individual from one week to the next! So, beware! Inform the leader of the jam of your desire to sit in. Do not give him your history up to that point, your favorite bands or nostril circumference. If you have a mutual acquaintance that is genuine, mention it and this may save you the trouble of waiting for three hours to play. Other than that, he or she will probably ask you if you can sing. If you can, it means they can take a break and go to the bar, so the likelihood of you getting up sooner than later is good. If you don't sing, grab a seat because it could be a while, and lay low on the sauce. A drunken musician is about as en vogue as a leisure suit. When you finally get up to jam, make sure you are in tune, and it is helpful if you have your own guitar cord. Most jams have amps ready to go and some folks get a little weird if you walk in with your own amp, but keep one in the trunk just in case. One of the members of the house band will probably be up there with you but sometimes they will just call up people on the different instruments and let you figure it out from there. Whoever is singing will shout out "this is a shuffle in A" or "slow one in E from the V," or else they will just blast off, and you are expected to hang on for dear life. Whatever you do, be sensitive even if the others are barbarians. Watch your volume, be attentive for cues and listen, listen, listen. When given a solo, the unwritten law is to take two choruses or twenty-four bars. You may be egged on to do more, or they may cut you off after one chorus. Watch and listen. The other unwritten rule is to play two tunes and get off. Some may stay longer because they are friends of the band or whatever, but two tunes is usually the norm. After a few of these jams you will have sussed out the posers from the folks who just want to play and get better, and you may even find potential band mates. If you use the above as a warning, if anything. you should be able to weather the phenomenon that is the blues jam. Thanks folks, and stay tuned for more Guitar Clues!

EXOTIC SCALES & LICKS

16 TANTALIZING SCALES
80 GREAT WAYS TO USE THEM

Introduction
The exotic scales in this book can be thought of as scales that are not related to the standard major or minor scales. Most of them have seven notes, but a few have more or less. They provide an excellent source for technical improvisation/composition and work in many styles, such as rock, jazz, funk, pop, and R&B.
This book contains a total of 80 examples (five for each exotic scale), and its purpose is to show you how to use these scales in any chord combination from the harmonized scale. Each exotic scale is harmonized with its respective chord on each scale degree, giving you a better understanding of the scale's sound and its possible harmonies.
The examples are recorded over grooves featuring a full rhythm section, so you'll have a good overview of how to use the scales in your own music. Each example is repeated at tempo a few times, after which it's played very slowly so you can hear each and every note. The licks don't progress in any particular order, so feel free to skip around to the ones you like. Enjoy. Jean-Marc

Set the World on Fire

Fretboard Mastery is the natural companion to my advanced technique book, Speed Mechanics for Lead Guitar. Both are the result of my personal search as a guitarist. Years ago my goals on the guitar were essentially two-fold. First, I wanted to eliminate any physical restrictions. That is, I wanted to be able to play anything, including any sequence of notes, at any speed. My experience in developing that kind of technique was then organized into Speed Mechanics for Lead Guitar to help others accomplish the same thing. Second, I wanted to understand the fretboard inside and out. I wanted to make it completely transparent, so my ideas could flow instantly from imagination to the guitar without any need to "translate" (i.e., hunt for the right notes). When I heard something, whether from inside or outside my own head, I would know instantly how it appeared. So I could just "think" the fretboard and compose songs and solos entirely in my head. Nice and practical. However, my pursuit to understand the fretboard didn't stop with the fretboard. How could it? After all, what is the fretboard but the guitarist's gateway into the musical labyrinth? So in order to truly understand and make full use of the fretboard, one must understand music itself. And that brings up my third goal. Did I say I only had two? Never believe that. From early on, I was curious about how music worked in a larger sense. How did my chosen style relate to other styles? What were the common elements and the differences? I sought a unifying view. I wanted to see the big picture as well as my own specialized niche to, I suppose, properly "place" my experience. The good news is that gradually I achieved this fretboard "transparency" as well as the wider knowledge of music that went with it. As a result, music seems simple. And it is, when you look deeply enough and separate the decorative elements from the meat of it. But make no mistake, it is a simplicity born from a myriad of details and ingrained skills. So it only feels simple after you know it! Not much consolation, I suppose. Nonetheless, this book is my attempt to make it "simple" for you, too. Fretboard Mastery is a comprehensive ear-training, theory, chord, scale, melody, and soloing book. It builds a powerful yet flexible framework for understanding music and guitar-my view essentially. We start with the very bedrock of sound and build up the structure right to the top, which will allow you to quickly absorb anything you choose and take your music further. I know that music lives in your untapped imagination, and this book will help you unlock it. Yes, it's advanced. It may at times seem difficult, but persevere. The rewards are more than satisfying and will last a lifetime. Good luck with your playing!

The Goal of Fretboard.
Fretboard Mastery is a set of tools designed to make the entire fretboard your playground. Yes, it is challenging. It is intended for intermediate to advanced players who want to see further and take their musicianship to the highest levels. It's not for everyone. We begin with a long series of ear-training exercises to build the connection between your inner ear and the fretboard. Then we cover a number of the larger musical structures in the primary positions and continue ear-training to recognize them instantly by their sound and associated fretboard shapes. Next we look at how music actually works with regard to tonality, chord progressions, melody, etc. Finally we extend our knowledge over the entire fretboard in a series of superimposed patterns. Through this whole procedure, you learn more than a bunch of scale dot patterns-you learn how to true use these various sets of notes to make music. All keys, all scales, all notes, all options. How is my approach different? Well, let's examine the more common approach. Usually you find such things as scales, chords, arpeggios, and ear training presented as separate concepts. First you memorize a bunch of scale dot patterns. Then you memorize a bunch of chords-some with fancy names-and you wonder how many of these you'll actually use. You may learn some music theory. You hear about tricks: take this scale and use the same notes, but move three steps this way, cross your fingers and play backwards and this mode becomes another mode, etc. But there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason, or if there is, you give up because it seems too complicated. Furthermore, each area-scales, chords, theory, and songs-remains separate. And a lot of it seems downright irrelevant. Faced with this, most guitarists eventually give up and reconcile themselves to the idea that they just "aren't strong on theory." Of those that continue to wade through a sea of details, many recognize that there is a deeper understanding that yet eludes them.
The missing secret is the knowledge that all these different things are really just different aspects of the same thing. This fundamental thing is the structure of music, seen through the guitar, and this is what Fretboard Mastery is really about. Attaining full competence with this information moves you beyond simply being a guitarist and into the realm of "pure" musician, since your knowledge of musical structure actually extends to any instrument. Here, we build up the entire picture the right way from ground level. Then everything falls into place as part of the interconnected whole. That sounds good of course. But if you are like me, you may be wondering what this really means in practical terms. Here are some of the benefits you will gain:
• Learning music becomes easier. As you hear music, you can instantly envision the correct fret board shapes and patterns in your mind's eye. You just pick up your guitar and play it right the first time.
• Creating music becomes easier. You won't need to hunt for notes you hear in your imagination, either. As a result, songwriting becomes easier and faster. Instead of noodling through tired old patterns hoping to stumble across a new idea, you simply listen to your imagination and create from there. You are no longer tethered to the guitar-you can "write" music while you drive, take a shower, serve burgers, entertain the in-laws, etc.
• Your musical ideas become more defined. The musical ideas that you "hear" in your imagination become more clearly defined. Instead of vague impressions, they begin to arise more and more with specific pitch and rhythm.
