Just as in his other book, Constructing a Bluegrass Mandolin, Roger's simple and concise step-by-step instructions show you the how and the why of it all, leading you on a path that blends discovery with pure joy. Over 200 photos and illustrations provide the kind of valuable reference no other book in the field can offer. Roger has used his technical knowledge on design, sound, and all of the important stages of construction that go into the building of a musical instrument, and has incorporated these ideas into one text. The end result is this valuable book of information that will help you to learn more about the makeup of a 5-string banjo, and more importantly, will give you the satisfaction and pride in being able to accomplish the building of a banjo that you can play and enjoy for years to come. 64 pages.

Roger H. Siminoff has been building and playing musical instruments for almost 30 years. During that time, he has had far more than a cursory interest in music, graphic arts, and industrial design - a combination that has made him one of America's foremost authorities on string instruments and their design, a leading music journalist, and a highly respected inventor. Born in 1940 in Newark, New Jersey, Siminoff showed an early interest in mechanical things. That laid an important foundation for his creative career. As a teenager Roger built his first instrument, a roughly crafted - but playable - 5-string banjo. The first led to a second, and that led to a whole series of instruments, and ultimately to a catalog full of Siminoff-crafted instrument parts. By the early 1960's, Roger was building custom banjo necks and parts for musicians in the New York metropolitan area. Before the end of the decade, his mail-order parts business, Siminoff Banjos, was providing special equipment and accessories to instrument makers in every part of the world. During that time, Roger was attending the Parsons School of Design in New York City. He majored in Industrial Design and then started a graphic arts company in New Jersey that specialized in photography, art services, and printing. Not limiting his mechanical interests to instrument construction, in 1963 he developed and built a prototype for a major East Coast printing equipment manufacturer, of an offset printing machine capable of printing the faces and flaps (at the same time) of envelopes at 18,000 impressions per hour - a rate unprecedented in the ihdustry. Having branched out into the building of guitars and mandolins in early 1970, Siminoff conceived and built special carving machines needed to do the exact shaping of instrument necks, and of mandolin top and back plates. By early 1973, he had developed a unique truss rod system to counteract the forces of string tension on musical instrument necks. For this design, he was awarded a U.S. patent in 1974. During the following year, that design was licensed to Gibson Incorporated, an internationally prominent musical instrument manufacturer now based in Nashville, Tennessee. With printing facilities readily available to him, Siminoff channeled his banjo expertise into the writing and preparation of an instruction book for bluegrass and banjo playing. The book established itself as a success in a matter of months. Then Roger embarked on an even more ambitious publishing project: the creation of a monthly music magazine that focused on bluegrass and old-time country music. In February 1974, PICKIN' MAGAZINE made its debut. Within two years, it was hailed as the most influential publication of its kind. By mid 1975, Roger had several other musical instrument and accessory designs in progress. These included the invention of a special fast-wind turning knob for string instruments (for which he was granted a U.S. And several foreign patents). The knob, dubbed the "CRANK," has been licensed to Gibson and to Schaller, (W. Germany) a world reknowned manufacturer of tuning machines. A unique nut, with adjustable slots for each string, also won Siminoff a U.S. patent and subsequently was Iicensed:to Dunlop Manufacturing. Then his frustrations at the inconvenience of changing strings won him a few more patents: he invented two methods to change instrument's strings without cutting, twisting, or knotting them. Both designs received U.S. Patents; and one, a string with a special pin_at its peg head end, was licensed to Gibson under the name "GRABBERS." In early 1984, Roger was granted another U.S. Patent for an unusual modular guitar, with interlocking parts that permit a musician to assemble an instrument to suit his or her tastes in much the same way a photographer might change camera bodies and lenses. Several other music-related designs are in progress on the Siminoff workbench, and simmmering with them on the burner are many projects not related to music, such as a radical design for a new valve system for the common gasoline engine. As a consultant to Gibson, Roger assisted in the reissuance of several instruments originally produced by Gibson in its earlier years. Among these were the Earl Scruggs model banjo (a replica of Scruggs' Granada model). Another was the reintroduction of the famed F-5 mandolin produced by Gibson in the 1920's. This instrument has been enthusiastically received since making its successful "comeback" in 1978. Doing consulting work for several other instrument manufacturers, Siminoff has been responsible for the development of special hand-finishing techniques, improved structural designs, and compatability "tuning" of the acoustic properties inherent in individual instrument parts. As an author, Siminoff's writings include literally hundreds of articles on instrument construction and repair, musical acoustics, and the history and craftsmanship of musical instruments. In 1978, Roger was invited to join GPI Publications in Cupertino, California, to head the staff of the newly founded magazine FRETS. As the magazine's editor, Roger helped build FRETS into a highly respected enterprise, boasting an international circulation, within a twoand- a-half-year period that saw FRETS purchase and absorb Roger's first magazine venture, PICKIN'. In the years that followed, Roger also became GPI's Production Director. In that capacity, he developed and installed a major computer system for all of the company's complicated subscription, advertising, and newsstand data processing. Now, in his capacity as GPI's Assistant Publisher, Roger Siminoff is helping to shape the music industry of tomorrow.

Tango for Guitar
Series: Guitar
Publisher: Centerstream Publications
Format: Softcover with CD
Author: Brian Chambouleyron
Composer: Jorge Polanuer

At the beginning of the 20th Century, the tango was born in Buenos Aires, and it was a style that spread dramatically all over the world. Tango is a dance, a rhythm and a characteristic musical color. The 13 solos in this book were written especially for guitar by award-winning composers Jorge Polanuer and Brian Chambouleyron, and each tune is performed on the CD by Brian, one of the most popular guitarists in Buenos Aires. The solos are presented in different degrees of complexity – tune up with the tuning notes on the CD and play along with the tangos, milangos, waltzes and even a guitar duet. The songs are also repeated on the CD without the lead for you to play the solo part.

The guitar is a charasteristic musical instrument in Argentine culture. Since the arrival of Spaniards to South America, it has had a key role in our folk music. Its sound has been the composers and interpreters' favorite. At present there is a broad and comprehensive catalog of songs and instrumental pieces, which encompasses early genres of the 19th century as well as the latest pop creations. At the beginning of the 20th century (around the time of the blues), the tango was born in Buenos Aires: a style arising from immigration and the melting pot which was going to spread dramatically all over the world. Tango is a dance, a rhythm and a charasteristic musical color. It is in tango where the guitar reaches a remarkable level of technical and expressive development. Today I propose an approach in the 'tanguero' style of playing the guitar, with some pieces specially composed by Jorge Polanuer, a composer and a friend, and myself. The tangos in this book are accompained by valses-tango and milonga-tango, similar and complementary genres also played in ballrooms. For each piece I suggest fingering based on the criterion of economy of movements. The numbers on the notes indicate the finger with which that note must be played, and the encircled number refers to the string. There can be other ways of fingering which might be more practical for you; that being the case, feel free to modify it accordingly. There's a way to play for every instrumentalist! The pieces present different degrees of complexity; therefore, they could also make an excellent complement in learning how to play the instrument. I hope you find this approach useful and you feel like filling yourselves with tango.

Brian Chambouleyron became a musician studying several disciplines (guitar, singing, composition, musical analysis, arrangements and orchestration). Always fascinated with popular music, he traveled to different Latin American countries to learn their traditions. He began his professional activity as a music teacher in 1990.Teaching led to the creation of children's shows. As a composer of popular songs, he participated in the Buenos Aires' Young Artists biennial exhibition. In 1993he went on his first professional tour to Europe, going all over France and Switzerland for two months and performing as both soloist and together with other musical bands. He also gave courses on Argentine popular music. From then on, his activities in European countries became regular. In 1996 he was in charge of the musical direction of the successful show Recuerdos son recuerdos (which received 5 ACE awards nominations). Brian Chambouleyron was nominated for 'male revelation'. (CD Recuerdos son recuerdos - La Trastienda Records). In 1998 he participated in the show Glorias Portenas (1998ACE award) together with Soledad Villamil, which was given an excellent reception by the critics and the public. The show toured continuously throughout Argentina, Latin America and Europe for two years, and participated in prestigious international festivals (CD Glorias Portenas vol. I and II - Epsa Music). Brian Chambouleyron was given the 1999Trinidad Guevara award for 'male revelation of the year' by the Department of Culture of Buenos Aires City. In 2000 he created the show Patio de Tango with Esteban Morgado, which also had a wonderful reception at a national level, and he started a long international tour (Paris, Rome, Madrid, Barcelona, etc). (CD Patio de Tango - BAM records, Department of Culture). With his last show, Tangos, valses and Milongas, he has performed in several cultural events and toured abroad, being highly acclaimed by audiences and critics. Brian has also composed the music for several theatre plays: "La firecilla domada" , 2004; "Pequena historia del tango", 2002; "Granadina", 2003; ect. In 2004 recorded the CD "Chambouleyron sings GardeI", a selection of the finest compositions by Gardel, arranged by B. Ch. (Random records, Buenos Aires). In 2005 recorded the CD "Voiceand Guitar", Twenty tradicional tango and argentinian popular music pieces, arranged by Chambouleyron. (Random records, Buenos Aires) on Ie canta a Gardel (Chambouleyron sings Gardel). This work is a selection of the finest compositions by Gardel-plus a few jewels from his songbook - recreated in an intimate and romantic atmosphere.

ESERCIZIO 1: stretching

This book provides intermediate and advanced guitar players-both flatpickers and fingerpickers-with ten classic Bluegrass tunes that can be played either solo or with backing musicians. These aren't "hot licks" or canned solo breaks; they're complete tunes, with intros, themes, variations on the melody, and endings. They should help you both build your repertoire of songs and learn some new playing and arranging techniques. Compared to other traditional guitar styles, guitar as a lead or solo instrument in Bluegrass music has a relatively recent history. Don Reno and Doc Watson were early prominent players of lead guitar on fiddle tunes in the late Fifties and early Sixties, followed by notable players such as Clarence White, Dan Crary, Norman Blake, Tony Rice, Charles Sawtelle, Russ Barenberg, and many others. These players not only used the guitar to play the melody of the tune, but were known for the "hot breaks" they played when it came time for instrumental solos. They used the tune's melody as the basis for creative variations and, in some cases, departed entirely from the melody to improvise solos from scratch. This was more akin to jazz-style soloing than traditional Bluegrass playing. The growing importance of Bluegrass lead guitar was reflected in, and likely reinforced by, the rise of Bluegrass guitar contests in venues such as the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas and the Old Fiddler's Convention in Galax, Virginia. Anew generation of skilled players-including Wayne Henderson, Steve Kaufman, David Grier, Bryan Sutton, Steve Lewis, Robin Kessinger, Scott Fore, Allan Shadd, and many others-are both carrying on the tradition of lead Bluegrass guitar and continuing to push its boundaries. Relatively few notable Bluegrass guitarists have recorded as solo performers, a format that requires the player to subtly or radically vary the melody, register, or his or her picking techniques in order to maintain energy and interest over the course of the performance. Norman Blake recorded a few solo f1atpicked instrumental pieces on his seminal Whiskey Before Breakfast in 1976. More recently, David Grier released the highly acclaimed I've Got the House to Myself, an all-instrumental solo flatpicking recording (with the exception of some low-key second guitar on two tunes). In 2005, Wayne Henderson released a recording of solo Bluegrass/Old-time/Folk guitar performances called Made & Played. The tunes in this book and the accompanying CD were chosen from the Made & Played release and the session outtakes as the best examples of solo Bluegrass-style guitar. Wayne grew up listening to the fiddle playing of his father and the guitar playing of neighbors, who skillfully accompanied their own vocals and other instrumentalists. He was heavily influenced by the lead playing of Doc Watson, whom he still calls his musical hero, and his playing shares Doc's hard-driving energy and clean articulation, even at break-neck tempos. Also like Doc, Wayne uses variations on the melody as the foundation for many of his solos and enjoys playing "up the neck" to provide more energy, melodic variation, and interest for the listener. Unlike Doc Watson and most other Bluegrass lead guitarists, Wayne uses a thumbpick and metal fingerpicks instead of a flatpick. However, the arrangements we chose for this collection work equally well for flatpicking or fingerpicking. As shown in the following musical excerpt, his picking technique on these tunes follows the same down-up pattern that flatpickers use with their picks. Wayne picks the downstrokes with his thumbpick (p) and the upstrokes with his index finger (i). (continua)
