ARRANGED FOR CLASSICAL GUITAR

35 OF THE WORLD'S MOST POPULAR MELODIES FOR GUITARISTS OF ALL STANDARDS TO ENJOY

Nessun dorma, Rhapsody in blu, ecc.

FOREWORD
There has always existed a need for a series of books to provide the classical guitarist with a repertoire, long been available to the pianist, of the music most loved by both player and listener alike. The "Progressi e Popular Classics" series fills this gap by presenting the music in a clear, concise form. Teachers will benefit greatly by virtue of being able to substitute teaching pieces written by Carulli, Sor Giuliani, Carcassi etc. by the well known music of Chopin, Strauss, Tchaikovsky etc. This will allow the student to develop quicker and happier, because each piece would be well known and therefore easier to grasp.
Another important benefit of this series is that the student will acquire an excellent general know ledge of music outside the normal guitar repertoire which will stand him/her in good stead for later study.
TECHNICAL NOTE
1. Fingering is included for all pieces only once and not again for repeated passages.
2. Dynamics and tempo markings have been omitted to allow the player to use his/her own ideas based on the general "feel" of the music.

“PRACTICE DOES NOT MAKE PERFECT.

PERFECT PRACTICE MAKES PERRFECT”

Welcome to the second installment of the repertoire supplements to Pumping Nylon. As the subtitle indicates, these pieces are more advanced than the repertoire in the previous installment. They are primarily concert pieces instead of the shorter, more pedagogical etudes presented in the wy to EarLy Intermediate book. Therefore, the pieces tend to be longer and much more substantial. Consider this book to be a brief representation of the types of pieces that contain specific technique-building elements (such as concentrated scales, left-hand slurs, arpeggios, tremolo and the like). When practiced correctly and with the proper intent, they will aid in developing your guitar-playing skills. In our continuing quest to serve you something new and tasty to consume, we have made an effort to put some newer pieces on your plate. We hope to not only help you enjoy significant progress, but to also open your eyes and ears to new, delightful concert pieces to perform for the enjoyment of others. A "checklist" of specific issues upon which to focus-such as technical and/or musical challenges, fingering and practicing tips-precedes each piece. If taken to heart, these pieces should be of great benefit to you. As always, it is a good idea to check your progress with a teacher when problems arise, as there is no ideal substitute for expert advice. As in Pumping Nylon, I encourage you to take the ideas presented in each piece and expand on them yourself. Find other pieces that will further help you overcome any obstacles. You have what it takes to play anything, and with some mindful practice, you will!

About the Author

Scott Tennant's reputation as a performer and teacher is known worldwide. His accolades include becoming the first American ever to win the first prize in the Tokyo International Guitar Competition in 1989, and silver-medal performances in both the 1988 Concours International de Guitare of Radio France in Paris and the 1984 Toronto International Competition. He is recording the complete solo guitar works of Joaquin Rodrigo for GHA records, including the concertos with Leo Brouwer conducting the Cordoba Symphony Orchestra. His debut solo release for Delos, "Wild Mountain Thyme," is a recording of Celtic music for the classical guitar. Born in Detroit in 1962, Scott began playing the guitar at six years of age. During his junior high and high school years, he studied classical guitar with Lee Dyament and Joe Fava. Also while growing up in Detroit, he began taking flamenco lessons with Juan Serrano. When Maestro Serrano moved to California, Scott replaced him as the accompanist for the Maria del Carmen Dance Company. He also played the bass trombone in his high school concert band and the violin in the school orchestra. Scott moved to Los Angeles in 1980 to attend the University of Southern California, where he studied with Pepe Romero and James Smith. It was during this time that the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet was formed (then the U.S.C. Guitar Quartet), and he has been touring and recording with the group ever since. As a student there, he performed in the master classes of such luminaries as Joaquin Rodrigo and Andres Segovia. He now teaches as a member of the faculty at U.S.C. The Quartet can be heard on their recordings for GHA, Delos and Sony Classical.

There is a compact disc available for this book. It includes performances of all the pieces by Scott Tennant except Rasgueado Exercise in Solea and Alzapua and Thumb Study in Solea, which are performed by Adam del Monte. Use it to help insure that you are interpreting the rhythms correctly and capturing the style of each work. The symbol above will appear to the left of each piece. The track numbers below the symbols correspond to the piece you want to hear. Enjoy!

POPULAR CLASSICS OF THE GREAT COMPOSERS VOLUME 1. SHEET MUSIC BOOK for GUITAR with CD .

I temporali dell'anima. Contiene: Tema dalla 9th sinfonia (Beethoven) -fantasie impromptu (Chopin) -per Elisa (Beethoven) -violino concerto tema (Mendelssohn) -caro nome (Giuseppe Verdi) -tema dalla new word symphony (Dvorak) -tema dal concerto n.1 per pianoforte e orchestra (Tchaikovsky) -march from schiaccianoci suite (Tchaikovsky) -theme from surprise symphony (Haydn) -waltz (Brahms) -golden wattle waltz (Waldron) -aria from La Traviata (Giuseppe Verdi) -Jesu joy man’s desire (Bach) -over the waves (Rosas) -poet and paesant (Suppe) -symphony n. 40 (Mozart) -pizzicato polka (Strauss) -sleeping beauty waltz (Tchaikovsky) -pizzicati from Sylvia (Delibes) -roses from the south waltz (Strauss) -tema dal capriccio n.24 (Paganini) -songs my mother taught me (Dvorak) -tristesse (Chopin) -liebestraum (Liszt) -traumerei (il sogno) (Schumann) -solveigs’ song (Grieg) -spring song (Mendelsshon) -tema dalla 1st sinfonia (Brahms) -serenade (Shubert) -raindrop prelude (Chopin) -marcia nuziale (Wagner) -tema della sinfonia patetica (Tchaikowsky) -dance of the little Swans (Tchaikovsky) -tema del piano concerto (Grieg) -bolero (Ravel). 64' CD

Niccolo Paganini, was born in Genova October 27, 1782, and died in Nice on May 27, 1840, was an Italian violinist, guitarist, and composer. Other instruments he played included the viola and mandolin. He is considered to be the World's gift to the violin and his virtuosity and showmanship are legendary. Being a gambler, he was forced to pawn his violin to pay his debts. Perhaps it was his gambling instinct that led to his technical risk taking when performing Although he owned a Stradivarius, his favorite violin was a Guarnerius. Ironically, his Guarnerius was in fact the property of a wealthy merchant who loaned to him and which Niccolo refused to return. Paganini first performed outside Italy in Vienna and his legend spread throughout Germany, France, and England. Although the exact age he started playing the guitar is uncertain, he composed his first pieces for violin and guitar when he was 12. In later years he associated with the most notable guitarists of his day, including Giuliani, Carulli, and Legnani. Carulli remarked that "It is not generally known that Paganini was an excellent guitarist and that he composed most of his airs on that instrument, arranging and developing them on the violin according to his fancy." Niccolo's brother Carlo was also a guitarist. Niccolo once considered bringing his brother to Milan to play the guitar part for his quartets. Paganini lived during the Golden Age of the Guitar. Listed below are the names of great guitarists of the past, all born within a span of 32 years:
Fernando Carulli 1770-1841
Francisco Molino 1775-1847
Fernando Sor 1778-1839
Mauro Giuliani 1781-1829
Anton Diabelli 1781-1858
Niccolo Paganini 1782-1840
Dionisio Aguado 1784-1849
Luigi Legnani 1790-1877
Matteo Carcassi 1792-1853
Zani Ferranti 1801-1878

The dream of Andres Segovia (1893-1987) was to take the guitar out of the hands of the Spanish folklore
guitarists, who performed mostly in taverns and place it on the concert stage. He decided
that in order to have the guitar receive the respect that he felt it deserved, it would need to
be taught in the colleges, universities, and conservatories. Because of this intense concert
career and his mature years, for his dream to be fulfilled he had to train teachers, who he
called his disciples. Segovia accomplished his dream. Today the guitar has respect and
credibility because of his vision and work. Bravo to the maestro!
While my performing career began in Miami nightclubs, much like the Spanish folklore
guitarist, I went on to study with Segovia, who personally awarded me a scholarship that
he paid for. I have performed on the concert stage with symphonic orchestras, and I am now
a college professor. I have come to understand the significance of his dream.
Ironically, my dream is the complete opposite to that of Segovia. I believe that for the
acoustic classical style to flourish, it must be put back into the hands of the people. My vision
includes all guitarists, regardless of style or background, becoming familiar with the
classical guitar technique and repertoire. To see my dream fulfilled, I have had to make
learning fun and simple, without sacrificing the integrity of the information. By the mid
1980s my vision came to life in the form of a book entitled A Rock Player's Guide to Classical
Guitar. It was the first classical guitar book that included the notation/tablature/tape
format. I chose the rock market because at that time they were the only guitarists who were
genuinely interested and eager to learn" classical" from me. This, of course, didn't surprise
me, since I too began as a rock guitarist. It was obvious that when classical guitar was
accessible to all guitarists, more people would hear and enjoy the beauty of the pure guitar
style. Since my first publication, thousands of new classical guitarists have surfaced.
All of my books come in notation/tablature/CD format. The recordings prove that all of
my arrangements have been tested and do sound guitaristic. All of the great late composers
were fine musicians, as well as composers. They could play the music they composed.
you can also play the great classics! With the tablature and the recording, great music is
closer to your fingertips than you might imagine.

About the Author
Ben Bolt is credited with being the first classical guitarist to introduce thousands of new people to the classical style of guitar through his videos and books, which use a revolutionary format of learning. In the past, guitar students needed to learn to read music at the same time they were learning to play the guitar, which was complicated. Since the publication of Bolt's book/ recording packages, beginners are able to play immediately. The tablature, using lines and numbers to show where the notes are, and the recording, which is rhythmically self explanatory, empowers all students to play. Bolt's work has been mimicked throughout the publishing world. Because of his vision of making classical guitar accessible to all kinds of musicians, the classic guitar is being experienced by the masses.
Andres Segovia, the father of classical guitar, said, "Ben Bolt is an excellent guitarist with fine tone." Segovia personally paid for a scholarship so that Bolt could continue his studies at the Musica en Compostela, which Segovia had founded. During the Spanish Civil War Segovia had been in exile in Montevideo, Uruguay. He was not concertizing in Europe, due to World War ll. Because of extra time he took on one of this most talented students, Abel Carlevaro. Carlevaro took lessons every other day for over ten years in Uruguay. Because of this historic fact, Bolt sought out Carlevaro in order to attain more information about Segovia. In Paris Bolt studied with Maestro Carlevaro, who wanted to continue teaching Bolt in Brazil at the International Guitar Conservatory. There, under full scholarship Bolt was introduced to more Segovia information, but equally important, the Carlevaro school of technique. During the next several years he went on to Montevideo, Carlevaro's home town, and completed his music studies under the direction of Maestro Carlevaro and Guido Santorsola, the great late distinguished Italian composer and conductor. Several Ben Bolt books have appeared on the best seller list. His video, Anyone Can Play the Classic Guitar has been become a reference for college students as the authority on basic fundamentals concerning classical technique. He also appears in Mel Bay's video of the Modern Guitar Method Grade One, a huge commercial success, selling millions of copies. Bolt divides his time between publishing, performing with orchestras, and teaching at the college level. He believes anyone can play the guitar well, provided they have these three ingredients: a good instrument, a knowledgeable teacher, and music that holds the student's interest. Bolt's work is distri1?uted internationally and has been featured at the yearly NAMM show (National Association of Music Merchants) in California, as well as the International NAMM show in Germany. His influences include Mel Bay, Beatles and Segovia. Ben Bolt is available for concert and master classes.

24 Caprices, Volume 1 (Fisk)
Caprices 1-12
"These Caprices should be heard more often on guitar for the sake of the guitar. This is a musical feat well worth the effort&any one of the 24 could provide material for masses of practice&such a schedule should improve even the very best players. With comments, fingerings, exercises and advice from Fisk on these masterworks.&the editor has worked hard to present the reader with a solution&I can only recommend this sturdy issue to all of the Paganini devotees out there." Neil Smith, Classical Guitar Magazine

"I'm sure many of you were blown away when you listened to the Fisk CD of Paganini Caprices, but now the transcriptions of his arrangements are now published!" Guitar Magazine

"Finally, we have the book to accompany Fisk's wonderful CD. This publication is exemplary!" Gitarre & Laute Magazine

"Now with these transcriptions, the definition of a guitar virtuoso is at a new level." D.B., American String Teacher Magazine

ELIOT FISK
Since his first solo recital at the age of thirteen, Eliot Fisk has performed in major concert halls on four continents. He has devoted considerable energy to expanding the repertoire of the guitar-first through his transcriptions of literally hundreds of compositions by masters of the past (Frescobaldi, Froberger, Scarlatti, ].S. Bach, Soler, Haydn, Mozart, Schubert, Schumann, Mendelssohn, Paganini, Granados, and others) and second, through intense collaboration with contemporary composers such as Robert Beaser, Luciano Berio, Nicholas Maw, and George Rochberg, all of whom have written major works for him. In addition to his numerous recordings, he performs regularly in recital and as soloist with orchestra. Mr. Fisk has sustained a life long passion for chamber music, working frequently with flutist Paula Robison, and also performing with Victoria de los Angeles and Hermann Prey, cellist Steven Isserlis, double bassist Gary Karr, and violinists Gidon Kremer and Dmitri Sitkovetsky among others. Eliot Fisk is also active as a teacher. He has taught at Yale University (where he founded the guitar department upon earning his M.M.A. in 1977), the Hochschule fur Musik in Koln (where he was Professor from 1982 - 1990), and was recently appointed Professor of Guitar at the "Mozarteum" in Salzburg where he founded the Andres Segovia Institute, as a tribute to the great Spanish guitarist who was his teacher and mentor. The Institute seeks to develop new and creative solutions to problems in performance practice, instrumental technique, and career development facing young musicians today. Eliot's 1992 Music Masters release of Paganini's Caprices climbed to 18th place on the Billboard classical charts, and elicited awe and astonished praise from around the country.

For me there are three great landmarks along the Gradus ad Pamassum of guitar technique: the

essential Etudes of Fernando Sor, the 12 Etudes of Heitor Villa-Lobos, and a final peak of truly daunting
proportions, the 24 Cap ricci, Gp. 1, of Niccolo Paganini. John Williams opened the door to this final
possibility some years back when he showed so superbly that the Capriccio 24 could be played on the
guitar. I began to experiment with others in the set around 1977, and slowly became convinced that
a way could be found to play all 24 on the guitar in the original keys. I often felt like Dante at the start
of the Divina Commedia: lost in a dark wood with no idea how to get out: "mi ritrovai per una selva
oscura che la diritta via era smarrita."
At times this feeling approached that famous inscription over the gates of the same author's inferno:
"Lasciate ogni speranza, voi ch'entrate" ("Abandon all hope, ye who enter here!"). Nevertheless, little
by little I found ways of negotiating what had seemed impossible. Along the way a lot of people gave
encouragement. I would like to single out Antonio de Innocentis of Caserta, Italy, who, in addition
to his careful proofreading of the engravings for this edition shared with me some of his tricks of the
trade, particularly in Capricci 11, 15, and 17. Enormous artistic inspiration came from maestro
Ruggiero Ricci who graciously shared the wisdom of over half a century's experience of performing
and living with these works of genius and who even made some specific practical suggestions on how
to transcribe some intransigent passages in parallel octaves in the first part of Capriccio 23!
At this writing, after 15 years of playing these pieces on the guitar, I can still say, time permitting, I
would happily spend an entire day practicing any single Capriccio of the 24. So rich are their
instrumental and musical possibilities. I'd like to share a few tips that have helped me along the way:
1) Isolate the difficulties: Even in the most difficult passages most of the notes are not hard to play.
It's the 10 - 20% that are truly hard to get to or from that can make an entire passage sound sloppy.
Therefore: Analyze through slow practice exactly where the difficulties lie. Practice what's difficult.
Don't be scared by what is not difficult! When you lose your fear, you play better.
2) Transpose difficult passages in the order of the cycle of fifths until you have played the difficult
passage in 12 keys. (A "passage" may be as short as 4 notes!)
3) Experiment with various rhythmic alterations of difficult passages. ... (continua)
