Modal Mojo is an in-depth lesson on modes for contemporary guitarists. Each of the 13 modes on the play-along CD is explored from both a single-note improvisational and rhythm guitar point of view. You'll notice that this book contains very little text; it's intended to be used for reference to show the modes, patterns, scale harmonies, examples, and etudes in music notation and tablature. Join me on the audio CD, where you will find the demonstrations and my discussions about each example. And we'll do a lot of playing, too: we'll learn the correct mode, its fingerings, and some optional scales for each of the 28 tracks on the play-along CD. The modes are divided into three sections: minor, major, and dominant. I'll demonstrate each mode and talk about concepts you can use to make your modal playing melodic and interesting. I've also included an etude for each mode. The etudes, which are sample solos from 8 to 32 bars in length, include intervals, arpeggios, chromatics, and rhythms: all the ingredients for an interesting improvised solo. I'll take you through each etude slowly, then we'll play it up to tempo with the corresponding modal groove. Next, we'll get into the details about how to play interesting modal rhythm parts. We'll look at the scale harmony and theory for each mode, and discover ways to use extended and substitute chords to create convincing rhythm parts. In the Resource Section, you'll find fingering patterns for all the primary "parent" scales that the modes are derived from. These include the major scale, harmonic and melodic minor scales, and pentatonic scales. I've also included a hybrid scale called a minor sixth pentatonic. The Resource Section also includes the most useful patterns for the symmetrical diminished and whole tone scales, as well as a special chapter on the three principles of chord substitution. Modal Mojo addresses the most common modes a modem guitar player might encounter. All seven modes derived from the major scale are included. From the melodic minor scale we'll look at the Lydian #5, Lydian/Dominant, and Super-Locrian modes. We'll study the Ionian #5 and the Phrygian/Dominant modes from the harmonic minor scale, as well as one other modal groove, which is not really considered a mode: the Dominant 7#9. You'll find this popular groove discussed in both the dominant modes section and the minor modes section. The study and understanding of modes and the scale harmonies derived from them is truly a study of the workings of music. Although our emphasis is on playing rhythm and soloing on single-chord extended modal grooves, the knowledge you'll gain will go a long way toward understanding key centers, theory, and how chords work together in progressions. Be sure to understand the mode, what its parent scale or key center is, and the chords that are built off of its scale tones. Make it a point to notice the sound and color modes create. And don't forget to take advantage of the guitar fingerboard as a guide to find solutions: think of it as a slide rule, remembering that chord shapes and scale patterns can be moved up or down to new locations. Modal Mojo is organized in a way that allows you to start with any mode you choose. If modes are new to you, I would recommend tackling the modes of the major scale first. From the minor category, these include Dorian, Phrygian, Aeolian, and Locrian. The major mode category includes Ionian and Lydian, and the dominant group includes Mixolydian.

When Rick was 11, his family moved to São Paulo, Brazil, and soon after he took up the guitar. While still in his teens, he began performing professionally in São Paulo.

From 1981-1987, Rick lived in New Orleans, Los Angeles, and Miami, where he studied, performed, and built a reputation as a versatile player with a remarkable command of bossa nova.

Rick headed back to Brazil in 1987 to rub elbows with the players he admires so much, as well as to research Brazilian music straight from the source – he's been living there ever since. In 1990, he teamed up with vocalist extraordinaire Maria Alvim; the two continue to perform together to this day.

In 1993 and 1994, Rick was commissioned to compose for the award-winning Grupo de Dois dance company. In 1996, Rhythm and Romance, the highly anticipated debut CD of the Udler-Alvim duo, was released in the U.S. The CD includes Rick's compositions with famed Brazilian lyricists Paulo Cesar Pinheiro and J.C. Costa Netto and guest appearances by some of Brazil’s top musicians, including world-renown artists João Parahyba (percussion) and Bocato (trombone).

Publications such as JazzTimes, Jazziz, Just Jazz Guitar, Acoustic Guitar, Rhythm Music, and The Beat gave the recording outstanding reviews, and it was chosen “best debut album of the year” by the nationally syndicated radio program The Sounds of Brazil.

In 1999, Rick had the pleasure to produce legendary Brazilian guitarist Paulinho Nogueira’s first U.S. release, Reflections, which received superb reviews. For a complete change of pace and a bow to his childhood idol, Rick performed as George Harrison in a 2002 Beatles-revival theater production in São Paulo.

Rick’s first entirely instrumental CD, Papaya, was released in Brazil in 2006. The album was conceived as an homage to the acoustic guitar and recorded, mixed and co-produced by studio veteran Eduardo Gebara. Percussion ace João Parahyba once more adds his unmistakable touch along with the superb Zé Alexandre on acoustic bass and on one track, Lika Meinberg on piano. The Brazilian and international press have been unanimous in their praise.

In 2007 and 2008 Rick toured in Brazil and the United States, which included performances and Brazilian guitar workshops at the annual Chet Atkins Appreciation Society convention in Nashville,Tennessee, one of the major fingerstyle guitar events in the USA.

The Brazilian Sound for Fingerstyle Guitar, a DVD lesson taught by Rick and produced by Stefan Grossman's Guitar Workshop was released in January of 2009. During the lesson, Rick shares many of the essential techiniques that are unique to Brazilian guitar styles and which are appreciated around the world.

Brazil has produced some of the most vibrant and exciting guitar music in the instrument's history. In this lesson, Rick Udler discusses and demonstrates styles, techniques, and rhythms of Brazil's great players. This is a unique opportunity for guitarists to delve into the beautiful sounds of this musical land.

Rick begins by going over chords that are commonly used by Brazilian guitarists. He then teaches the accompaniment to singer/songwriter Gilberto Gil's beautiful composition, "A Paz", to illustrate the use of chords with open strings. A step-by-step analysis of Bossa Nova accompaniment in the João Gilberto style follows along with suggestions on how to develop a better feel for this sophisticated, syncopated groove.

The solo guitar rendition of the Antonio Carlos Jobim/Newton Mendonça classic "One Note Samba" will be a welcome addition to many players repertoires with it's rhythmic drive and rich harmony.

Samba rhythms are then explored with examples that are sure to enhance one's groove and arsenal of techniques. Rick also gives examples of inner string movement which will prove invaluable to those looking for ways to generate more excitement and authenticity in their comping. A sambified version of "Happy Birthday" demonstrates how to apply these techniques to a familiar tune and make it sound fresh.

And, to provide an even greater challenge for all players, Rick gives a detailed analysis of his tour de force solo guitar piece "Amigo Paulo", composed as an homage to his friend, guitar legend Paulinho Nogueira (1927-2003). This tune with it's choro influences incorporates many of the techniques Rick learned directly from the master and is sure to provide much musical food for thought for players who are looking for innovative new colors and textures to add to their playing.

At Berklee, we constantly encourage our students to apply what they are learning to real music. Over the years, we have found that certain tunes map well to the curriculum in terms of the techniques required to perform them. Bill Leavitt was among the greatest guitar teachers in the history of Berklee College of Music, and his Modern Method/or Guitar books have been central to Berklee's guitar curriculum for many decades. This songbook includes some of my favorite jazz standards to give to students working through the Modern Method/or Guitar Volume 1. In addition to reading these tunes from the jazz repertoire, I encourage you to spend some time with classic recordings and practice transcribing them by ear. Some of these arrangements are for solo guitar, and some are duets. This is similar to the method itself, and it underscores Bill's insistence that guitarists learn to be well-rounded and explore a variety of playing situations. The accompanying recording will let you practice all parts. The solos and duets are of varying levels. Practice them slowly at first, always working on playing them as legato as possible. If the solo pieces are too difficult, start by practicing just the melodies (the single notes and the top notes of the chords).
